Hi all,
We're planning on implementing ReWire support for RealBand, and wondering if/how you would use it.

Please comment on the typical uses/features that you would expect from a ReWire implementation in ReaBand.

Have Fun!

YA-AA-AA-AAA-AAYYYYYYYY!

Ahem.

Thank you.

The only use I have in mind now is to link it with Propellerhead Reason.

The primary capability I would want is reliability. Trying to use it with my non-PG DAW has been squirrelly. I see reports of this in the Propellerhead forums, too. It does not seem to be nearly as straightforward as "start the host, then start the slave".

The only other Rewire-capable program I have is Steinberg Nuendo. I'm not sure there would ever be a need to link two DAWs together except (he said, it just having occurred to him) needing more than 48 tracks while retaining the full capabilities of RealTracks. My vision now extends only to most additional tracks being synth/sampler voices in Reason. To paraphrase Will Rogers, if I need more than 48 tracks of audio, I'm probably trying too hard.

Will this implementation be available as a patch, or will it be necessary to buy a new version of RB?

R.

While I'd much prefer Reason implementation in BIAB, I hope that this is the first step towards that happening.

Why?

Because BIAB used as an "engine" into any full-featured recording software such as RealBand would be dynamite stuff.

*Ability to generate smaller snippets of a larger project in BIAB in realtime, audition them within the sequence, change them at will, etc.

*Ability to use the BIAB harmonizer to generate parts for the sequencer. I do this now, but it is rather labor intensive, what with the exporting to DAW routine and all.

I've got more, just got a call and have to run, will address this in depth in a few...

Sounds like you're looking for BBW to be a client and RB the host.

I should point out that we haven't started on ReWire yet, and we're not sure at this time how long it would take or even if it is feasible at this point. It might potentially make it into RB 2010 but we're not yet sure.

I have never used rewire, on the programs i own that use it, i alway found it kind of difficult to use, and resource hungry. If I had my way i would respectfully ask that before you add Rewire to this system, please make it function better with VSTi technology. There are still VSTi products that i would and i am sure others would love to use, that do not play well in RB or PTPA.

Both BiaB, and RB are very useful products, and have so many wonderful features, i use both all the time, but still RB suffers from some levels of instability compared to many other DAW programs, please work on these issues first. I know that due to RB's implimentation of BiaB features and RTs, and RDs, that it is a tad more complicated than a simpler DAW like a Cakewalk MC, or such, but this is precisely why making the program a bit more robust and dialing in the VSTi implimentation would pay off in the long run.

These are just my personal opinions, yet i feel they have merit. Respectfully yours, Rob Helms

I agree with Robh. Lets get RB functioning 100% before tackling something else.

The reason i say this, and i bet ST, and many others agree, is that RB is right on the edge of being one of the most powerful and interesting software on the market. The little buggy things it does knocks it down a peg, but it is right there.

Perfect example of this is the old N-Tracks software package. People just hurt to love that software, but release after release, it get more powerful but still never quite addresses the stability issues that hinder it.

While RB is far more stable than N-tracks, the little issues it does have keep it from really taking flight.

Rewire sounds neat, but until it does plugins fully and properly, of what value is that added feature? Anmd will it add one more feature that is potentially buggy.

I have no idea what ReWire is or what it does or how it could be useful. OK, I googled it. It seems like a pretty high end type of product/technology that would have usefulness to only a few users here. I would expect there are a lot of things that you could work on that would be more beneficial to the majority of users.

A much better goal would be to improve real tracks and have them be able to respond to midi notes (physical modeling like Mr Sax T does).

As one of the 'official' beta testers for n-Track ver 6 I would like to add my amen to those who would rather see existing issues taken care of first and foremost before moving on to ReWire.

I can't mention here the many times new 'features' have been added and frankly created more bugs to chase, while the stability and engine and compatibility issues were ignored.

I would suggest scouring the forum(s) and taking care of existing issues first.

Poppa, i have seen you over on the forum there and always amased at the loyalty there. I bought versions 3 and 4, but gave up, when Mac turned me on to MTS, which turned out to be extremely stable. I went from fussing and fighting software to recording in one evening. N-T is such a nice little app, but i tried version 5 and 6 demo's and they crashed immediately on me.

I hate to see anything like that happen here. RB is a very solid concept that could be very top drawer. I for one want it to grow and get better, if that is rewire, then cool. But VSTi stability and adaptation first please.

I wonder if what Mac is getting at is rewire between Biab, and Rb, so you can use the features in Biab to fill tracks in RB. That would be neat, just not at the cost of stability. I would love to see RB grow to MTS's level of stability, and become one of the big players.

Totally agree. Things like endings that don't work right. I really want to see the VSTi implementation brought up to snuff. The reason why? I also own Jammer and all of their styles the program that use to be BIAB competitor. I still use it on occasion as I like some of the parts it generates in the piano/keyboard area. Well they just came out with an update to Jammer so it can be used as a VSTi. I would love to be able to plug Jammer into RB.

"Haste makes waste" is actually one of those things our parents passed along to us that turns out to be true.
Whether it's a guitar part or a software program. Haste makes waste. Surely, let's get it right. PGMusic doesn't seem to me like a company that would never have time to do it right, but have time to do it over.

From propellerheads.se:

Quote:

What is ReWire?

ReWire is a system for transferring audio data between two computer applications, in real time. Basically, you could view ReWire as an "invisible cable" that streams audio from one computer program into another.

So, what can ReWire do?

ReWire has the following features:

  • Real-time streaming of up to 256 individual audio channels (up to 64 with ReWire 1) from one application to another.
  • Real-time streaming of up to 4080 individual MIDI channels from one application to another (255 MIDI buses with 16 channel per bus). This feature requires ReWire 2.
  • High-precision synchronization - complete, glitch-free sync between the two applications, with no settings to make and no parameters to worry about.
  • Common transport functions - if both applications have built-in sequencers of some sort, you can play, stop, rewind etc. in any of the applications and they will both locate to the same position.
  • Additional querying - one application can "ask" the other about audio channel names, etc. This feature requires ReWire 2.

At one time several Reaper users started a push to get Re-wire into Biab/RB.

It would give a tremendous boost in useablility in my opinion. No limit on # of tracks.. Greater flexibility for routing. More Vsti's.

Good luck to the BIAB crew on an easy processr

Peter,

Although I do have RB and plan to keep upgrading with each new app, I rarely use it as I am not nearly as big into recording as many of my fellow forum members. I tend to use RB & BIAB more for arranging and playing live gigs than anything else. With that said and while I am for anything you guys have to do to keep your company relevant and profitable my selfish bottom-line interest is for live gigging applications, i.e. the development of new real tracks, possibly better endings for BIAB and an easier to use big lyrics window. The recent real track additions were wonderful, I can only hope you maintain the standards with future applications.

Later,

I'm not familiar with Rewire either but in reading about it, it sounds like we can use another host like Sonar as a plug in to Biab or RB? I was going to pipe in and say please fix the VST issues first because I have Jamstix but if Rewire allows me to use JS in Sonar and to route the output directly into RB that would be cool.

I'm pretty sure you can only 'Wire two apps together at a time. If I understand you correctly, I'd run JS as a VSTi in SONAR, the host, then run RB as the slave and pipe its audio in via Reqire. Might take some experimentation, though. (JS is the one that responds to dynamics, right?)

I've found that it's rather more complicated than just "start the host, then start the slave" as it says on the Phead site--some setup needs to be done within the host--but when you have it working it is a Beautiful Thing.
