Suppose I have a USB midi out from Biab connected to the In on the Ketron SD-2
My Soloist Track is assigned to Ch 8 and I want it to play Strings on the Ketron
My Melody track is assigned to Ch 4 and I want it to play Piano on a separate Synth which is connected to the Midi Through of the Ketron
But in this configuration, the Ketron plays both the Strings (ch 8) and the Piano (ch 4).
How do I stop the Ketron from playing channel 4 but allow a separate Synth to receive ch 4 data from the through channel on the Ketron?
Thanks for any assistance. Trevor

Hi Kevin, What you want to do can be accomplished using SYSEX Commands, see page 15 of the SD2 manual for details. GM MIDI RX CHANNEL ASSIGN F0H 26H 7BH 12H 00H GMPart Chan F7H Chan = 00H-20H, 20H=OFF GMpart 00H-1FH
However, if you are wanting to do this with Band in a Box, I know of no way to send SYSEX commands such as this from within BB at this time. RealBand or PowerTracks can send SYSEX commands, it should be possible to do so from them, although it may be rather hairy to get thru that learning curve with the Ketron. On the other hand, you may be able to change the order of your MIDI Daisy Chain, depending upon what the other MIDI device is and if it has internal commands and menus that would allow you to send to it first, then filter the data that comes out of its MIDI Out (Not Thru) such that the offending channel does not get sent to the Ketron. This may be a good way to go for it. If your "other synth" is perhaps a fullblown MIDI Keyboard, that's the way I'd try things first, consult the manual for that keyboard to see if you can filter channels between the MIDI In and the MIDI Out, most good full-featured keyboards can do that. Finally, sometimes, in Live situations, I just let both synths fire at once and let them "layer" - which can sound really lush. Like getting twice as many violinists for the price of the one section. --Mac

Thanks again Mac for going to so much detail, it's really appreciated. The 'other' synth unfortunately is a PC running Cantabile with Ivory as a VST, so it actually has USB as the connection "In-point" to the computer. ( Illustrated in previous post ). The midi connectivity is from a Roland UM-One Midi to USB adapter. So there is Midi IN and Midi THRU but no Midi OUT from this device. The idea of changing the daisy chain is great thinking, but I am not sure I can do this because it's not a hardware synth, and is designed to have Midi In and Play Audio out, rather than midi out. Your comment on the use of software for live work is well received. When I mentioned 'live', I should have elaborated as in live for rehearsals and practice, not for recording, and not for gigs. Unless you see any 'gotchas', I think for recording, that RB, together with that multi-channel midi device will be a direction to consider. One midi going to the Ketron, the other Midi going to the Ivory VST, with single channel instruments played out from each track. Kind regards Trevor

With software synths, each one may behave differently from another, each one may have differences in programming, can't really even compare what one person is capable of getting away with on their pc as compared to yours due to the fact that there can be many variables between the two, such as Windoze versions, eveb Windows setup among identical versions, as well as things like how the particular mobo and chipset, along with bios, may interact with the software synth.
So what I'm saying to you is that you don't know what you can do until you actually try it.
And that again points to the well-designed and executed multi-channel usb MIDI connect device and drivers.

You should also look into some of the available free MIDI routing programs, one of those could serve as your channel filter for sending data to differing channels. Bing MIDIOX and MIDIYOKE for starters. The single MIDI output of programs that can only address one MIDI output or port can be routed thru these to create multiple outputs and channels as well. here: http://www.midiox.com/ also bing generically for MIDI routers and the like, there are others out there. --Mac
