No earth shaking news here, just a quick observation that BIAB and "standard" software like Microsoft Word and browsers worked fine on a test laptop under the new Windows 10 beta. I noticed a similar thread on the SONAR forum and decided to post here.
So far, Windows 10 feels like Windows 7 in stability and friendliness and Windows 8.1 in performance; in other words, really good. I have not used any music production software other than BIAB yet, so I don't know what kind of problems I might encounter with drivers for good sound cards etc. Still, I am looking forward to this new OS when it's ready.

Good to hear that Matt.
But at the same time the hours I spent tweaking windows 8 downloading classicshell, the charms bar that I never liked, the absence of a start icon meaning that a lot more searching to send a shortcut to desktop, wasted hours and in the end a sense of relief that when my hard drive failed, and I couldn't get windows 8 to work again. I did have a backup made with acronis but for some reason I couldn't get windows 8 to start, so put a backup of 7 in its place.
Most computer mags rate windows 8 as a failed OS now and in my opinion it was not good of Microsoft to put users through the experience that was windows 8.
Just my opinion, others may differ.

I agree many computer magazines don't like 8, but music magazines do seem to like it for what it has under the hood, away from the user interface.
SONAR's chief tech, Noel Borthwick, works closely with Microsoft and he reports each new version of Windows has brought improvements for music production. I hope 10 also brings better performance even as it restores the familiar Windows interface that dates back to Windows 95.
And what's wrong with charms bar (laughing)?

The funny thing about Win 8 is that its easily fixed with a 5 dollar app from Stardock and so few people seemed to know that.
I think you mentioned using it didn't you Matt?

Yes, I got Classic Shell a few minutes after installing Windows 8 and finding myself confused. Then the slightly better Start8 from Stardock.
Great memory, Bob!

I think you mentioned using it didn't you Matt? Its my view that users shouldn't have to install any third party utility to change a very basic and much needed item as the start menu, and would go as far as to say that shame on Microsoft for putting people through that, hence the sighs of relief and jumping in the air for joy at the return of something that should never have been left out in the first place. We were all guinea pigs. Ok in the end it was working ok for me, but after hard drive fail, when I installed my acronis backup of 8 I got a message at startup of 8 that a digital file couldn't be verified. Oh and nothing wrong with a charms bar if you happen to be in good company Musiclover

I have a Windows 8.1 phone. Other than it's superior text messaging, I REALLY miss the iPhone 4s that I had issued to me for work at my previous employer.
I bring this up because MS seems convinced that their OS should 'feel' the same across platforms. Many things are still broke-down in the phone version of things compared to operations in even iOS 5.

I'm just using it for browsing the internet, but I do like the start menu. It's not just back, but enhanced. Also, so far, no crashes.

I installed it in a VM (don't have an extra box to let it sit by itself).
I like that the start menu is actually functional now (not like what they did with 8.1). I've used StarDock for my Win8 box; we'll see if Win10 obviates the need for it.
I had wanted to upgrade my laptop to Win8, but it has a dual video controller (one kicks in for on-battery usage; the other for wall outlet) that HP decided to NOT support with Win8, so couldn't do it without a lot of battery drain.
I suspect I'll run into the same problem next year if I try to upgrade to Win10 when it's released, but I'll give it a try.
