I'm re-recording songs with BIB, they sound so much better. I've been working with harmonies, quite a few in this one. Overdubs are pizzicato strings and arpeggio guitars. Just discovered when you choose two of the same instrument, they don't double, you get two performances. In this song there are two electric 12 string guitars, one on each side.

Hi Will.. here's where RealBand comes in handy. You can take any track after it's already generated and simply copy it to another track, then treat each copy separately.

Did I hear a female backing vocal in the mix? Your wife or girl friend maybe? Or did you process your voice to sound higher?

I see you have just 25 posts.. that means you haven't been here too long.. and I've been gone for a while, so this may be the first time I've met you! Welcome to the forum!

I like what you're doing here, and I look forward to hearing more from you!

I like the song and the genre. There is a lot to like here but I was left feeling the arrangement was a bit to busy and overdone so that it detracted a bit from the overall vibe of the song. That's happened to me in the past as BIAB offers so many choices it becomes hard to say no to yourself when choosing instruments.
I think the song lyrics are written well and other than the nits mentioned, enjoyed the song.

I appreciate the critique. I was displeased with the mix myself, and did another today. https://soundcloud.com/willrockwell/love-is-gonna-find-you

Will,

After having listened to both versions, I think the second mix is an improvement but the drums still seem busy. Perhaps you could cut down on the number of drum fills and have other instruments fill in those spots instead.

Since the track has a sixties kind of vibe, you could use a sax or an organ or something like that in places to take the busyness away from the drums and still sound true to the style. But that's just my opinion and others may see it quite differently.

David

Will,

I really enjoyed that from the start, the choir and your castrati voice.

I too see the Cars which in my book is excellent, great band.

I shall listen to the rest of your songs later.

Welcome

You got me Dave, I'm afraid I placed fills at the beginning of every measure, now I see why you don't do that. I'm learning. A new mix will be forthcoming.

regarding the drum fills:
What works in a recording is different than what works in a live performance. Recordings are typically much more controlled and measured, but it's practically expected that when performing live the musicians will overplay.

I agree the drums are over the top in this song, but to me the excess gives the song a signature "live" feel. Which, for the genre, a certain lack of discipline and rebellion are almost required to get "the sound"

my 2 cents. One advantage of starting out with the intention of achieving a "live" sound is that the end result will almost certainly be more exciting. On the down side, it will also tire your ears more quickly. It boils down to creative choice based on the effect you hope to achieve.

I like it

Yup, assuming you are using a DAW you can generate as many permutations of a RT as you like and then cut and paste from them to create one track that better fits where you are going. I will typically use 25+ regens to get a solo like I want it and 3 or 4 for a rhythm track. My philosophy on solo RT's is get them to complement the melody as much as possible and never distract -- given that, obviously, we can't create the melody with the RT's.

Yup, again re the drums. Just use the blue/green markers to change styles and or create fills. BiaB will make you learn about drums whether you want to or not!

Pardon the ramble....

I too like the song and the feel. I'd just keep whittling it down until there's nothing left to take away. Like Charlie said, when I first started with BiaB I overloaded every song because it was so easy. You are well on the way!! We enjoyed where you are going
with this.

Feel free to ramble, I'm learning a lot. It was easy to take away some of the green and blue markers, export the drums and import the new track into my DP24. The board was still set up with the mix, all outboard gear still patched in, so it was easy to create a new mix. You were right about making room for the other instruments, I filled some of the holes with the twin Rickenbacker 12's, they sound better than drums anyway. This feedback process is improving my songs, thank you all so much.

Seems that you are getting the drums tamed. The guitar arps could be dropped just a hair - a dB or 2 to fit in the mix a little better - they jump out just a little (not much). It seemed that your harmonies were pretty close to your main vocal - particularly the opening - they might benefit from being panned out more. For this style song, your vocal could use more reverb (I thought - but that is, of course, a personal choice).

The overall song has a good energy to it.

It's obvious you are enjoying your Band...

Floyd, I don't yet have enough confidence in my harmonies to pan them out. I think this song is done, I'm going to break down the mix and move onto Secret Admirer, the stalker song.

I did one more pass since the board was set up and ready to go. Harmonies panned between 10 and 2 and up a little, arp guitars down slightly, more reverb and a little chorus on lead vocal, pizzicato strings up under "fly out into space", 12 string guitars filling more. This is definitely the last mix, thank you all for your help.

Rich, even though my preference in music is for new alternative (and 80's Eurotrash), my own stuff is definitely influenced by the 60's. There were lots of great sound ideas that were not completely explored, and hooks left undiscovered.
