One word...WOW! Some very innovative and creative thought went into that GUI. While I thought it would help to get my blood pressure back down, turning back to RB just now kinda stop me in my tracks. I'm afraid many of you are right: PG is for old guys and now that I am, I understand.

I bought Fruity Loops Producer edition 8 years back and have just downloaded, and installed, 12. IT IS MIND BLOWING!! It looks just as good in real life cool
It is an amazing programme BUT BIAB is still the 1st port of call for my songs, there is nothing to beat it.

Another thing that Image Line do is free upgrades for life !!!
How they do that and make money I have no idea?

There is not enough time in the day any more grin

The GUI does matter! If I had some extra money this would be mine. But alas the budget has been spent.

By the way... a free demo version is available

FL Studio demo limitations:

The only limitation is that projects can be saved but can't be opened again.

To open your project again, purchase an FL Studio Edition including registrations for all instruments and effects used in the project. A lower featured FL Studio registration will open a demo project, but the not registered plugin(s) will be replaced with placeholders.

Some functions that need save/load to be active don't work in FL Studio demo. Examples are the "clone channel" function and the "Save preset as..." menu for plugins...

All other functions in the FL Studio demo are fully unlocked. Some plugins may give static (white noise) or silence at regular intervals as part of the demo limitations. FL Studio demo is the equivalent of the FL Studio Producer Edition + All plugins bundle package.

Remember, you can render to .wav, .mp3 .ogg or .mid files prior to saving a demo project.

The demo running on my dual screens is frinkin eye candy along with the 40 track demo dance beat pounding my monitors is sure to amaze and impress friends and family members.

But I shudder at even the thought that this would replace my current DAW. Simply not enough hours in the day to figure all this stuff out. grin

Yes, Pretty!

Now if only a pretty GUI could WRITE a hit song (and beware - when DAWs can do that - the DAW seller won't need us end users) or even just a pleasingly good song.

But alas, when it comes DAWs, a pretty face cannot write, compose, mix, or produce better music than your "ugly Betty" DAW (be it Sonar, Cubase, Reaper, Mixcraft, Abelton, Logic, Reason, PowerTracks, or the other dozen or so contenders)

Matter of fact a lot of music HAS ALREADY been written, composed, mixed, produced and SOLD (that's the real measure sales, anything else is mental masturbation) in the many MILLIONS completely without PCs or DAWs.

They did it using ugly, noisy, analog four-track tape, HW mixer boards (manual no less, OMG the humanity of non-automation) with the music to be recorded played by musicians (see another thread) sometimes while reading (can you imagine the shame of it - having to read music) a paper and ink (pencil?) score!

Just a party pooper

FL Studio has always had a beautiful interface. While it can be used as a daw in the traditional record and mix audio sense many users seem to believe it's strength is working with beats, loops and other forms of electronic dance music (EDM)

A no cost alternative for Windows and Linux users is LMMS. FL-studio users should feel right at home with LMMS as, quoting from the LMMS website, it aims to be “a free cross-platform alternative to commercial programs like FL Studio.”

You can find out more about LMMS ++ HERE ++

Mr. Fogle: Regarding a DAW's strength lying in working with EDM: this has been said of Ableton Live, FL Studio, Propellerhead Reason, and perhaps others. This, in turn, would lie in the fact that not only are they complete recording suites, they also include elements which other DAWs lack. Cakewalk and Acid were also trendsetters in their early capability to use smart clips and acidized loops, which other apps have only recently been able to take advantage of courtesy of Elastique-type properties.

Ultimately they are all able to do the same things with varying degrees of ease. The various GUIs are useful for accommodating differing approaches to work flow and even individual users' learning styles. Hooray for that! (I have used BIAB on a limited basis to produce EDM, but was totally stymied by Tracktion's GUI.) The thing, as was said above, is to use the tools available, be it pencil and paper or a million-dollar production suite, to create the best music possible.

I am not arguing for any particular approach. I believe that BIAB and RB could use an update in appearance, partly for marketing purposes and partly for functionality, but also that they are unique tools with which care must be taken not to mistake them for anything else currently available.

A fancy GUI never wrote a good song. From much of the music I've heard lately, the new tech hasn't opened up a new world of creativity.

It's not the brush, it's the painter.

Bob, I agree that a fancy GUI never wrote a good song and that it's the painter and not the brush. However I will respectfully disagree with the hasn't opened up a new world of creativity.

BiaB is new tech and it has opened a whole new world of music creativity, at least for me it has. Without BiaB I wouldn't be doing music like I am today. Also a lot of jazz, new age, rock and ambient musicians have created a lot of new music using today's new tech tools.

I do think that PGMusic's software is new tech wrapped in an old school package. For those of us that have been using it for years have adapted to the old GUI and its many idiosyncrasies. However that old school package turns off a lot of potential buyers, at least in my mind it does.

Unfortunately in today's world PR management of a product can be more important of the product. Thus in my mind you wrap an excellent product like PGMusic software in a contemporary slick package it would reach a lot more potential buyers. YMMV.

Not arguing for or against any daw. I'm just pointing out that many daws specialize and there maybe a free alternative that is similar.

I agree I'd like to see BiaB and RB have a more modern looking GUI. I would also like for both programs to be more stable and consistent.

The GUI changes in 2014 and the automatic crash reports in 2015 indicate our concerns are noted and are being addressed.

I am grateful for the steps that have been taken and hopeful about those steps still in the future.

Having said all that, the GUI for Fl Studio 12 sure is pretty. smile
