Lovers...fighting...

The Band:
MIDI SuperTracks in song: 2066:Piano, Rhythm NewAgeAnswers Ev16 110
RealTracks in song: 811:Piano, Acoustic, Solo-Acc PopVancouver Ev 100
RealTracks in song: 1856:Cello, Background PopCountry Ev 085

ANOTHER CURVE

the front door screams behind her
a huffy last goodbye
supper sits half finished
it was a pretty good exit cry
but true final farewells
are quiet, with no act
i know the way her fever flows
i know that she'll be back

sometimes she doesn't give me a chance
somtimes i don't give a damn
these days we're given to arguing
using anything we can
you-don't-love-me accusations
"that's right" throws in the salt
go for the heart and don't let loose
i'll last-word you for the fault

sometimes i wish she'd really leave
i pray to god she'll stay
give your enemy an apology
give your lover another day
i can't be all she wants
i might be more than she deserve
every time i think it's straightened out
she throws me another curve
she throws me another curve
she throws me another curve

Thanks to my "early listeners" who helped me "get my bearings".
(you know who you are smile )

Comments encouraged.
Thanks for listening.
Have at it.

This a complex and sophisticated song. The same for the seemingly simple production. I can see where 'early listeners' would be quite helpful getting everything to come gracefully together.

In the end, it did all come together even though there are a lot of curves thrown in the song.

Good job, enjoyed it and respectful of the arduous work required to make it all fit together.

Great song and production Floyd.

I would imagine that as stated by Charlie a song like this must be one of the most difficult to write and produce.

I like the lines,

"sometimes i wish she'd really leave
i pray to god she'll stay"

Both emotions intertwined together

You have done a great job, I can see another CD on the way soon.

Masterfully written and delivered!! There is no more full or crafted pen on the forum. This is such a beautiful song about the ever common frail and struggling relationships with their oases and mind fields. A difficult and complex situation to write about but done this time so eloquently by a very skilled writer. Strings introduced in the end were perfectly measured. An awesome write, beautiful sparse arrangement, and a vocal which squeezed all the emotional juice out of such a fine lyric. Bravo!! Take care. Greg

Hi, Floyd !

I agree with what others,
who can formulate themselves
better than me, have said about
this tune !

This must be one of your
very best writes, though
I have to admit that everything
you do is simply the best !:))

Cheers

Thanks, Charlie. It mostly involved getting the piano to match the intent/emotion of the lyric. The NewAgeAnswers piano track is my "secret weapon". I've used it on all kinds of songs - especially the ones that I've done as piano/vocal songs. It plays the way I would play if I could play as a piano-singer-songwriter. And it has SO many variations. That one MIDI Supertrack is worth the price of the program. One could build a career using nothing more than that (I think). A few gens of it and pieced together at just the right times... it's golden. Thanks for your kind comments...

Hi floyd,

What a great audio journey. The song and its arrangement are first class!

As I sat here listening with my eyes closed, the image that appeared in my mind was that of a guy sitting on a chair on a lonely stage. He looked a bit like Marlon Brando in 'Streetcar Named Desire' - roughly semi-dressed and wearing jeans and a white singlet; no shoes. The guy was half-talking, half-singing to the audience. (His partner had just stormed off into the wings leaving shattered chaos scattered across the floor in her wake.)

To my ears, this song has "from a theatrical production" written all over it. (I mean that as a compliment.)

As always, you've managed to invent some outstanding phrases that are not only conversational but also set the tone and clearly define the characters within the lyrics. Some of the word combinations that left me thinking, "ooooh, that's very clever, floyd" were...

  • front door screams (In my mind, this personified the front door. It's a terrific choice of verb.)
  • huffy last goodbye ('huffy' is a great choice of adjective - it adds a whole heap of indignant depth to the 'last goodbye')
  • exit cry (You cleverly made me think of 'war cry' with this phrase.)
  • I know the way her fever flows (A very creative way of saying 'she runs hot and cold'.)
  • The four lines from "You-don't-love-me accusations" (what a great compound adjective, by the way!) through to ..."the fault".
  • "Give your enemy an apology, Give your lover another day" (such very powerful lines that astutely summarise the duality of the couple's relationship)

I totally enjoyed everything about this.

Regards,
Noel

P.S. I forgot to mention how crystal clear your production is. It's outstanding.

Gosh Floyd, what a beautiful song. I was involved in a relationship a very long time ago that made me feel exactly like that, so like they say "I feel the pain". tremendous song as usual my friend.

I agree with Noel - sounds like a song from a play. Not an easy thing to write. Beautifully done. Soulfully sung and that piano sounds terrific to be midi. What are you using for the midi sound?

I read all the previous replies first for a change and Noel's shows how different we all are because I thought an Andrew Lloyd Webber style song and I am not a great fan of "stage-musical soliloquies"

But that threw me because I heard Neil Diamond trying to sound like floyd, laugh as soon as I heard your voice and the piano.
Definitely listening first from here on in!!!

I didn't like the piano arrangement initially but it quickly grew on me. nice sparse arrangement. All in all I enjoyed.

Your voice and production, as usual, are impeccable.

Hi Floyd.

I always like a song which leaves you with something to think about and this one is certainly thought provoking.

Aren't these supertracks great? I wish I could play piano like that! The only problem is that you wouldn't normally track this up - you'd do the tracks at the same time so that the piano could follow the voice. I can only imagine how difficult it was to sing and follow the piano, but you've got it just right and the whole thing sounds like it was done live. Magnificent.

Very dramatic. Theres that Glen Campbell sound again.
This is such a good song.
There is a slight buzz panned to the R/H channel.
May be just me.

A nice classic "Triple A" structured, Jimmy Webb kind of song. Don't get many in that style these days.

Very nice work. The piano is as crisp and pure as I've heard anywhere. I gotta look up, and play around with the SMP-NAA.

Exquisite is the work I would use to describe this. Loved the production as well. I was waiting for the "band" to kick in but as I began to realize it was a piano song, I was already well "into" the song.

A crisp, clear, clean ballad. Beautifully put together with superb acoustics

Fantastic balance, absolutely top arrangement and so refreshing.

The strings filled in extremely sensitively

Tops!

floyd, The piano sound and editing is superb! The arrangement is very cosmopolitan. You must have gone to New York in your mind during the composition. The lyrics are intelligently crafted. The late entrance of the strings made them even more effective than if they had been there earlier. Sung with feeling and conviction. I liked it a lot and it shows another side of BIAB that we don't often hear on this forum. Congratulations on another fine piece of work. Tom

Powerful song, well written, love the sparse arrangement.
I like that you held the title out until the end.
The piano mix was great, enjoyed.

Musiclover - Thanks... I've always found this type song fairly easy to write - I think we've all been through this kind of thing...the trick is making it balanced - so that it doesn't become one-sided, angry, blaming kind of thing - the singer needs to share the blame to some degree even of just implied in order for it to work... thanks for the listen...

Hi Floyd.
I really enjoy the sparse clean clear style of this song.
The heartfelt vocal shows off the lyrics magnificently.
Like the way you let the ends of phrases fade.
Can certainly relate to the lyrics.
I think it all comes together perfectly.
My favourite.Cheers.
