During FAWM 2015, I was a assigned a picture and had to write a song based on that picture. Here's the pic:

For the banjo part I used Tony Trishka's "Shortenin' Bread" lesson from his banjo CD lessons (ha, ha). Mixing-wise this was one that I had trouble getting to sound good in mono. I think I improved it, but it is one of the weaker mixes. I think the banjo and ukulele occupied a lot of the same sonic space (eq-wise). Now, of course, it would have been a lot better if I had let BIAB play the banjo, mandolin and guitar parts -- but I like doing some of the things myself (even if it is not nearly as good)!

I am also testing out the links to bandcamp -- don't worry, it is always free to just play.

I'm a Big Bear @ bandcamp (free to play)
(c) Emmrich 2015

I'm a big bear going on a journey
I’m a big bear crossing rivers and rocks
never know what the day will bring
but always like watching them hawks

I wonder what it would be like to fly
I always liked to climb up so high
never let go except once as a cub
mama bear thought I was gonna die!

deep in the woods
or by the river
I am the king
of my domain
but I know
my limits
I still get wet
when it rains

I’m a big bear, yeah
but the world’s still bigger than me

Kevin: vocals, banjo, guitar, ukulele
PG Music: bass (592), drums (NashBrushBalDbKEv16^1-a:SideStick, Brushes , b:Brushes, Snare)

from Crows Say What?, released October 15, 2015

A fun listen, Kevin.

Always enjoy your vocals. You are a true original.

The banjo seems a bit too up-front, I think...

Kevin, I read the lyrics before I listened to the song and already liked the song. LOL!

Then I heard it. You know, it would fit perfect in a Disney movie.

Did you do the background vocals too?

Well done!

Fun listen! It brings back fond memories of The Neverhood.

Floyd: Thanks for the listen. I already turned down the banjo a bit -- it was really dominating before. I'll take another look at that.

Guenter: It was a fun assignment, for sure. Thanks for stopping on by.

Sonny: FAWM stands for February Album Writing Month. Each year we get together and try and write/record 14 songs in 28 days. This year should be much easier -- there are 29 days!

Greg: Thanks for giving it a spin. It is appreciated.

VideoTrack: Thanks for taking the time to give it a listen.

RichMac: That was a great picture to work off of.

I'll get to the others later today. Going to visit my daughter in college for a few hours.

Kevin,
That was brilliant, I don't know what I would have done for that picture but it would have been nowhere near as catchy.

great stuff

Sounds like something the Jerry Garcia Band might
have done during his banjo days...super cool imagery.
Can't quit thinking about the Bear staring up at the hawk!

We enjoyed it...a lot!

cklester: It does have a little disney character to it. Thanks for the listen.

JimFogle: Thanks for stopping on by.

SpaceDog: Yes, he is happy -- he still wishes he could fly, though!

dcuny: I never saw or heard of the neverhood, so I had to look it up. I might have to watch an episode or two. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Sergio: Thanks for giving it a spin and leaving a comment!

tommyad: Glad you enjoyed the listen, thanks.

Rob: "organized chaos" -- I like that! Thanks for the listen and remarks.

gibson: That picture challenge was a lot of fun. Quite a few pretty good songs came out of it during FAWM.

Janice & Bud: It is interesting where song ideas come from. I have no idea where those hawks came from, though.

RnAM: yea, it is a bit balou-ish. I think that was probably the musical inspiration.

Kevin,

Very entertaining... a lot of fun in fact. I like the harmony vocals. They are perfect. The mix sounds excellent, too.

It's two thumbs up from me.

All the best,
Noel

P.S. Like the outro!
