Hello PG team,

I don't very often post anything in this wishlist section but now I have a couple of requests (the arranger keyboard function I already requested before).

1. I would love to have the SongSmith function (preferably improved) featured in BIAB. You sing something, the program automatically finds the appropriate chords for your singing melody. Doesn't have to be a RealTrack arrangement, MIDI would be enough.

2. I find the Style Creator in BIAB rather complex, and not always leading to good results. Is it possible to make this simpler like in the program Onyx Arranger for instance?

http://www.ntonyx.com/onyx.htm

Here you can simply take one bar of any MIDI file and immediately create a style of that. It usually sounds good on the first attempt.
In one of my recordings below I used a simple MIDI file created by the auto arrangement program DigiBand. Imported it into Onyx Arranger, took the very first bar and turned it into a style:
(the female vocal sample was directly included since it was part of the MIDI file. I used the Musyng Kite as MIDI soundfont).

3. This is related to the above. I would love to have Soundfont (SF2) support in BIAB. Currently you can load one in Coolsoft Midisynth and set that as MIDI out channel. However it is not possible to render these tracks directly in BIAB since they are not Direct X. So this will involve third-party tools to render those MIDI tracks.
Direct support would be best, if not impossible maybe through a built in DXI wrapper or something?

4. Arranger keyboard function.
There are many programs like RMCA, MAAS, One-Man Band 10 which offer a real-time keyboard arranger function. So do Yamaha keyboards. You play a chord and the style automatically responds to that. This is something you would actually expect in a program like Band in a Box.

I hope that these tips will be of use, and that some of them will be featured in the next edition of BIAB ;-)

Rob, I agree so +1

About #3, I think the PGMusic should drop Direct X and go to strictly VSTi. That way you could have a ST2 player as the default GM sound source. With this set up you could change patches and/or import a better GM that suits your purpose. Also you could render the BiaB tracks to audio using the VSTi.

With VSTi and VST you have the easy option of making any VSTi as your sound source. Plus it opens BiaB to a whole new world of sounds (Kontakt, ST3, etc) and effects without the current hassle. YMMV.

{edit} - PS - the rest of the MIDI world has already dropped Direct X.

Mario,

That would definitely also be an option, but GM mapping in VSTI could be a problem? I would love to have a GM map for Kontakt for instance. Make a general MIDI selection once and then have that working as an hugely improved GM soundfont. But that would take far too much work I think, if possible at all. I believe in Kontakt that's only possible with running multiple instances of the program.....
Personally, since I have severe RSI, I want to load/browse as little MIDI sounds as possible, since I use mostly the same VSTI's on a regular basis (mostly free Kontakt sounds, I have over 55GB of them).

Rob, I meant GM mapping for SF2 GM sound fonts and other GM sound sources only. The other VSTis would be for people like myself who don't necessarily work in GM.

You are right in the fact that you can not get a GM map in Kontakt.

Yes, I had a look at the Onyx Arranger. It certainly has some nice features.

Definitely +1 for your ideas.

Yes, the program is powerful but it could sure use some work on the GUI. Right now the working space in the tracks section, for instance, is way too small.
There is, by the way also a free version, but that doesn't support creating new MIDI styles I believe.
