Yep, we'll need to keep watching it. I hope it doesn't die, but actually does turn around. I suspect that road to profitability will affect the current "free" platform.

I recreated my Soundcloud account a few months ago and have been getting nothing but spammed. I keep getting these "so and so liked your song" and then I go to look and the play count has not increased. It is girls wanting me to like THEIR channel, and I don't even know if they are singers!!

So, I don't really use it anymore so I will probably kill it. I just wanted to have someone be able to get to my songs the easiest way possible. Now that is done, so I can kill it off again.

EVERYTHING ends up falling to the spammers. Even this place. Though HERE they squash them quickly. Soundcloud doesn't monitor their system for such things.

It's been dying a slow unfortunate death. I have always liked it more than the other services out there that were free. I too get lots of spam likes, but that is kind of true for anything that is free. When I'm actively pushing the songs, I do get comments on the songs themselves and that is nice.

Lately I've decided to switch over to Bandcamp and do a semi-proper 'album' of a single genre. Semi-proper meaning that I'm not going to bother offering up CDs; people can stream from Bandcamp for free if they want to download, I'll actually charge for the stuff. We'll see if anyone bites on that!

I've never put an album together of a single genre of music; but this news about Soundcloud tells me even more that now is the time.

175 million customers likely means it will not disappear. With that base some entity will buy them and try to figure out a way to make money with it.

They will probably eliminate the free version of SoundCloud. I pay at the lowest level available and I get no spam. YMMV

There is an alternative... Soundclick.com ... I know, many folks here are using that site. It's free.

The significance to many of us is that Soundcloud is PG Music's preferred upload site for the user showcase forum participants. And PG Music maintains a featured song channel amongst others on it.

I have a free SoundClick account and H-A-T-E SoundClick. I've had nothing but grief with SoundClick. Once they deleted seven years worth of uploads (and I was more prolific back then!) and twice they have blocked me from my account because they did not recognize me as the account owner. Once I'm blocked it takes more than a month to get a response and regain account administration access. I would not recommend the service to anyone.

Amen. The interface is a disaster and the requirement for flash even more so. SoundCloud looks very clean and classy comparatively... but I've always had the paid version.

I've been on soundcloud for around 6 years, I have the paid version, and while it is not even close to being perfect it is currently the best site out there IMHO. I'm also on bandcamp, reverbnation and soundclick plus a few others that I no longer maintain.

I'm hoping someone buys them out and invests some money into making the site better, the site has been neglected for quite some time. Their charts system for instance is a total disaster.

Some of my soundcloud friends have created accounts over on hearthis.at, a relatively new site.
I checked it out the other day, created an account, and uploaded a couple of songs. Looks like an ok place, might be an option if soundcloud doesn't make it.
