Is there a cut time time signature in the various styles? Or how do you change 4/4 to cut time (2/2)?

As far as I know, the direct answer to your question is No.

My experience with cut time is in Brazilian sambas. What genre are you working on?

For example, if I think a samba should be counted at half-note = 110, BIAB is set up to play it at quarter = 220. There are now ways around this, since both RealTracks and now RealDrums offer timebase options of half-time or double-time.

Tell me what you are working on.

Matt, I wrote a Jazz/Funk thing and put it in Finale in cut time. When tried to put the changes in BIAB but all the BIAB styles are in 4/4 (or 3/4, which definitely won't work). I couldn't even find 2/4! I thought it was strange that there is no cut time signature.

I agree.

To my knowledge, you have to write it in 4/4 and fudge the 'feel' by using a slow count and double-time timebase on one or more RealTracks.

I've played 'jazz/funk things' for a lifetime. Sometimes the notation gets into all 64th notes and spreading things out results in easier notation (but that's a somewhat different topic).

The key to cut time is that you count it, and 'feel' it, in half-note pulses. But it can still be notated in 4/4.

Our choir recently sang a piece that was notated in 4/4 time, but the tempo indication on the music said "half note = 90", and I directed it in two (not four). Otherwise, my arms would have gotten very tired very quickly.

So sometimes even printed music is notated in 4/4, even though (as Matt said) the "feel" is in two.

Often a piece is easier to read noted one way but easier to conduct another. The black marks on the page are not the performance.

I recently arranged a piece in 2/2 with a 1/2 measure every fifth bar. My instructions are to conduct it in one. This means that every fifth bar is beat half the time of the others. The syncopation is much smoother and easier to perform that way. I tried a number of ways to notate the rhythm before deciding that was the best–easy to do once I looked at it from the performer's perspective.

Oh, some conductor will ignore me and beat the half note, making it harder on the singers and giving the performance a choppy feel that is counter to what I wrote. I can only make the suggestion. That's the reality of performance sometimes.

Hey guys, thanks for getting back to me, but I figured it out. Initially I inputted my song in 4/4 with 1 or 2 chords per bar and ended up with 32 bars. However, in order to get that cut-time feel I wanted, I kept the same time signature and the same groove, but changed the harmonic structure to 2 or 4 chords per bar thus ending up with 16 bars for the song. This created the cut-time funk feel that I wanted for my tune. Thanks again for all your help.
