Hi Scott,

Got your message re using the laptop with the Lexicon Omega, however, here is what I am thinking re the Hard Disk Recorder, notably the ZOOM HD16CD. How about recording my Praise Team (7 singers and myself on keys) directly on the zoom, and I don't have to worry about interface, just hook up the mics directly thru 7 XLR inputs and my keys on one. Just have to check the levels, and then.....hey, let's RECORD TO A WHOPPING 80 Gigg hard drive......then do a some quick mixing...and then burn to CD's.....AND GIVE ALL MY SINGERS A DEMO CD copy for them to go home, listen and fine tune their act. Don't ya think that this would be more convenient instead of a laptop plus loaded on software and plus an interface?

Any thoughts on that?

Well, Mac's thoughts are always centered around K.I.S.S. and also definitely to tell you to get what YOU want to use, the way you want to use it.

"If you do your job right, pcm audio is pcm audio, nobody on God's Green Earth is going to be able to listen to the finished CD and turn around and tell you what gear you used to make the recording after simply listening to it."

The reduced complexity of that hard disk recorder may be just what the doctor ordered. And its not a permanent decision anyway. Get what you want after studying on these things for awhile, use it, get work done, tomorrow's another day, next year's another year, time's a-wastin'.

ZOOM HD16CD is street pricin' at around 700 bucks, right? I think so but didn't check.

Make a CD, sell 100 copies fer ten bucks each and...

(Can't wait. Which one will just have to figure I can't do arithmetic again? Well, first its a ballpark rendering, intended to factor in cost of 100 CDs and jewel cases, 'K?)

Hey Mac,
your math suits me just fine - plenty of "fudge factor"

First rule of engineering: the cost of any project wil grow to exceed available resources by at least 20%

20% ?

Oh.

You should see the projects over on this side of the pond, man.

20% is for the executives' beer...

Just sayin'

Look up the "Big Dig" Boston fiasco, er, "project" sometime for more on that.

Jah,

Well, now that you state how many tracks you want to record at a time, then of course the lexicon is out of the picture. I only have experience with the Tascam 2488 HDR, and very limited at that.

Some things you might want to check off:

1. Make sure you can easily get the files from the Zoom to the PC if you want to edit on the PC (this is inherently easier than on the HDR, if you can fly in your DAW software, IMO)
2. How's the manual? DL before buying and see if you can pre-learn the device
3. Make sure you have mic pre-amps for all the channels you would like to record simultaneously; or you'll be carrying around more gear than the zoom. Looks like the zoom has this, but always check. The tascam 2488 has only 4 mic pre-amps onboard, but a mess of sliders for post record mixing.

As a standalone unit, looks pretty cool - try to check out the bass and guitar amp modeling to see if that's serviceable. If so, then it does look like a pretty killer package for your above-stated purpose.

-Scott
