Great, we have gone from fake news to fake news reporters grin

Seriously, this could be the wave of the future and although it is very impressive it will take more jobs away from people. But this points to the importance of getting an education in computer programming and robotics.

If they are portraying that as a robot, I have to call BS. The anchor's movements are wayyy too nuanced and natural looking, which is the holy grail of robotics. I don't think we're there yet... and if we are, I don't think China would be the country to get there first.

The voice might be synthesized from text, but it looks to me as though it replaces the dialog from an actual news broadcast with a real anchor.

One thing it MIGHT be... there is technology already that edits real footage in real time, based on the facial movements of an actor. Its kind of scary because it enables the creation of false news bytes, portraying things that were never said by the person being portrayed... yet convincing enough to turn the tide of public opinion if it goes viral.

Indeed.

Until recently, people with an agenda had to resort to selective editing of real interviews, telling only the part of the story that fits their narrative. Now, they can just create a totally fictitious interview! And there is no "real" interview for comparison and rebuttal!

Imagine the damage to innocent peoples' reputations when ruthless people with an agenda start flooding youtube with realistic "hidden camera interviews" portraying outlandish opinions... or even "admitting to crimes" (not that there are actually ruthless people with agendas or anything, but I digress... ;-) )

We are at a point in time where it is becoming impossible to distinguish between real information and stuff that's total fiction. (Far as I know, that entire presentation might be fake, to set people's expectations that some breaking news should be viewed with reasonable doubt.)

I tend to think it IS true, however, because I'm into animation and I've seen similar products targeted at entry level noobs like me. I'm talking about products costing about $100 that make it easy to create facial expressions and lip synching on 3D models and 2d drawings. If the noobs can already do it... imagine what the pros can do with an unlimited budget.

While I have no idea whether or not this is real, I have no reason to believe that it isn't. Here's the article in which I came across the story.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/money/topstories/the-worlds-first-ai-news-anchor-has-gone-live-in-china/ar-BBPxjUz

There's also quite a lot about this on the internet (such as the following CNBC article)

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/11/09/the-worlds-first-ai-news-anchor-has-gone-live-in-china.html

As an aside, three or so years ago, I went to an art display that focused on sculptures created using silicon resin. The (hyper)realism of these creations was incredible. Down to the minutest of detail, they looked EXACTLY like real people frozen in a moment in time. It was quite an eerie experience.

Ron Mueck, an Australia sculptor, has created some incredible works using this medium. His artwork is easy to find using a Google search for "Ron Mueck".

The technique is quite similar to what you suggested - machine learning to create the image from a learned model.

The difference is that (allegedly) the text drives the synthesis of the image.

That is scary. Imagine being accused of a crime and they have an edited video of you confessing to it? I hope we are able to prove it's a fake. Imagine lives being ruined over this technology? Just wow.

Yes, people are actively working on means of detecting fakes.

But one of the ways these programs learn is they are judged by other programs. So if people find out how fakes are detected, they can train against that.

But the sad reality is that you don't even need this fakery - simply making an allegation is enough.

Even if a claim later turns out to be false and completely disproved, that first impression tends to remain the strongest impression - despite our attempts to reprogram ourselves. frown
