Well, my laptop finally crapped out. So I see a new computer in my future.

I am finding plenty of i5 with 16gb of RAM and speed of 2.6ghz or better. I am finding the same thing in i7 but it costs more money.

Is it worth the additional $ for the i7 if the RAM and the processor speed are the same?

Also, most of the machines come with an SSD. I assume I will have to purchase an HDD also. Anyone see any downside to this setup?

Thanks.

Buy what you can afford. The i7 is the newer one and a small bump in performance. It can have more cores and cache memory vs. it's i5 counterparts. If you don't want to spend the extra $$$ for the small improvement, don't.

On the hard drives, my laptop has the 2nd HDD on it. That's good for storing the music/media files, etc. If you're not comfortable tinkering with adding the drive on your own, order it with it already installed.

Some better I5 chips outperform the lower or mid-range I7 chips. It’s hard to answer unless you have two specific models to compare.

Put it this way.... It's been over a decade now.... when I decided to build my own DAW from scratch, I looked at the i3, i5, and the i7 Intel chips. I opted for the i5 Intel chip based on cost.

I'm still running the DAW to this day. I've never had any issues with running out of memory or the chip being too slow or any other issues. And yep.... I'm running a 32bit OS. Windows XP pro. And again, even with the 4GB memory limits, I have not seen any issues with performance.

Personally, I'd stay away from the i3 simply because it is the lower end.... but the i5 or the i7 should do a fine job for you. As was mentioned..... buy what you can afford knowing that it will be your processor for many years to come. At this point, I'd probably find a way to go with the i7 Intel chip.... I'm sure you can find a good price on one online, especially with the holiday shopping and sales that will be coming. Be ready and pounce when you see the right deal.

There are also AMD Radeon computers that are far less then the intel chips are. I wanted a machine to do both music and graphics and use AMD quad core with 13 gigs of ram. It works wonderfully, no complaints. They have comparision websites where you type in the 2 machines you want to compare and they tell you which one has more power.
