It appears that the BiaB Installation HD here is somewhat flaky after all.

While - as a workaround - trying to copy its content via some desktop PC that does recognize this drive onto the SSD that is recognized by the Surface Pro 8, I did get a notification midstream that something is wrong with the drive. PC froze - cold reboot - fiddling with the drive's USB A port -> now renders the drive seemingly thoroughly corrupted. It now does get even no longer recognized by the otherwise sturdy desktop PC. Botched drive - no installation . . .

It would be of interest, though, whether other users experience any problems getting the installation HD with its USB A port recognized by systems with USB C / Thunderbolt ports.
