WE the "thick" version
&/OR
We the other mix

Thanks for the suggestions folks...all were tried and a few remain.
Alison did a fine, fine job on this one & the M.E. did his little bit of magic well.

The song, it appears, isn't considered a song by music teachers...again.

I don't understand that statement. Would you please explain? Thanx

I listened to and liked both versions. To nitpick I think the vocals should be louder. But that is only my opinion.

Super cello, piano, and drums.

Mario,
Thanks. The vocals have been up n down and round n round. I decided to stop tweaking and have it mastered. As usual, it's my vocal leve preference.
As to the Music Teacher thing...

Hi Ray,

I remember this one. Very cool song! Vocal sounds good, and to my ears mix wise it's right where it needs to be for the song.

Bass is right on the money, I like the movement and lines you are playing. Cello sounds good too.

Nice!

Ray,
I would go with "thick" version. Vocals are more clear on the skinny... If it was up to me, I would just raise vocals on Thick by 2-4db.

Excellent sound design. Cello is a winner. Your vocals are great, just need to be more upfront in my opinion.
Thank you for sharing,
Misha.

Hi Ray,

I listened to both your songs. I listened to them some time ago too and liked it a lot.
Here I prefer the skinny one. Say contrary to Misha, but for the same reasons.

But..., I was also thinking it's a bit a pitty you sing the verses and the chorusses with the same effect. If I was asked what I liked, I would answer to use your normal awful wink vocals in the verses. The vocal effects in the chorusses makes the song special, kind of endearing.
Unfortunately I was not asked...

Nice day,
Hans

Man, I love that subtle bass. To me that's the star that brightens the vocal. If you are fine with the vocal volume, I won't comment on that other than to say I really like the way you sing these songs. I much prefer the skinny one. Man, that cello really adds such a good part of the overall feel.

Enjoy whatever happens!

This is a cool sounding song! To me your bass playing is a great treat in this! It really makes the song! I always like louder vox in a tune but yours seems to sit in the mix pretty well even though I struggled a bit to pick up a few of the words! I don't know if you use auto-tune on your vocals, but if you don't, you've got great pitch...spot on! That cello is the icing on the cake! I enjoyed the whole production!

Thanks, Torrey

Thanks Dani,
It was very easy to write...a little problematic to mix and received some bad vibes but I like how it ended.

Hello Misha & thanks.
Yes, thick seems to be the general preference.
Having been mastered it's too late to tweak any further...c'est la vie.

Hello Hans,
the only effects on the vocals are compression, reverb & tuning. The unisons & harmonies may be what you hear. Interesting idea but, alas, too late.
Thanks for the suggestions - the original post was where I asked, generally, for ears & ideas. I employed suggestions from David S & Floyd J amongst other.

I waited a month or two for the cello part but it was definitely worth the delay.
The woman playing it, Alison Reynolds, won the New Mexico award for best cover song arrangement, (her voice, cello & acoustic guitar),this year. She did a medley of All Along The Watchtower and Wayward Son.
I like the skinny one as well.

Hello Torrey,
I tracked the vocal for this one fairly well, for me, but had to "tune" the harmonies and change a couple of notes choices I made that weren't worth a complete retracking or trying to blend a drop in.
The bass was the easy part - combining root, 5th & octave mainly.
Thanks for your kind words.

I prefer the skinny mix as well. The vocal is excellent and there is some room between the vocal and instrumentation. I am sure the is quite a bit of difference in dynamic range between the two versions. Well done.

rayc,

I liked both versions, with maybe a slight preference on the “thick” version. I kinda lean towards Mario in thinking the vocals could come up a bit . . . but it’s a matter of artistic preference and style. It’s perfectly fine as is. Cool creative sound you’ve put together here.

All my best,

Deej

Ray,
Both versions are good; the song is quite darkly hypnotic. I heard more of the lyrics on the skinny version ( maybe you posted them before, but it would be good to read them and fill in the gaps),and I think levels overall are better there listening on `phones anyway.
Bass and cello combine very well to create the mood.
Cool music.

I like it! SUCH a COOL sound!!!

Both versions sound good.
If I had to pick one over the other, I'd likely go Skinny.

Both versions are excellent. Neither of us can choose one over the other and that's not taking the easy way out ... we genuinely like them both.

Alison’s cello was definitely worth your wait! (She is quite the musician, Ray, so congrats.) Via google we read a good bit about her - most impressive.

Everything sounds “in the pocket” … vocals, bass , guitar, drums, cello, etc. and the lyric is so poignant. Great performances by you.

We've developed an even deeper appreciation of your mixes since getting some new monitors with 8" subs.

Well done,

J&B

I prefer the skinny version. It sound cleaner/clearer than the other.

I never met a cello I didn't like...and I definitely like this one.

The vocal brought "Little Neutrino" to mind.
