I'm sorry if I put too many songs in quick succession on here ... the last thing I want to do is flood the board with my own musical experiments. That said, I promised myself I would finish my latest collection of songs (I hesitate to call it an album, LP or whatever) by 1 August. I needed (at least) one more song to complete it, and I got some free time, a couple of days ago, so ... long story short, here's what I created.

I Just Need To Know (Bach/Gounod/Delsono)

EDIT: new link added, 11 July 2022. Corrected some intonation problems and re-mastered the whole thing with a different voice preset.

I kinda cheated here. I love the works of Bach (as some of you know from some of my previous songs, where I've "sampled" him), so the chord progression here is entirely his. The melody is by Charles Gounod ... the lyrics, at least, are mine :-)

As I've said many times in the past month or so, I really want to write songs about something other than heartbreak, etc. etc. etc., so hopefully the finishing of this "album" and the start of a new one will give me new impetus, in that regard. But ... this needed writing (if only to make the album story coherent), and would have been out of place on this particular album, had it been about anything other than heartbreak. So, enough of me waffling on and on ... here it is. Thanks again for listening and for any comments!

THE LYRICS:

I just need to know
Why you turned me away,
I just need to know
Why you didn't stay,

I just need to know, how
You can hug me so tight
And not care at all
About our fate and our plight ...

Do you think of me?
The girl I loved so,
Do you dream of me?
I just need to know.

I just need to know, how you can
Say you belong to me,
I just need to know, how
You can then turn round to leave,

I just need to know whether
Me, you ever miss,
And why you walked away
Without even a kiss ...

I just need to know, if
You know this is your song,
I just need to know, if
This is right, for it feels wrong,

It does feel wrong,

And I need to know how
You feel, many years on,
For I cannot live
Whilst my heart is still gone ...

I need to move on,
But I can't, if I do not know
If I'm the only one
Whose soul is still so alone ...

Do you think of me?
The girl I loved so,
Do you dream of me?
I just need to know.

JAMES SINGS AND HE DOES IT WELL.
I'm not entirely sure I agree with you leaving the meadows melancholy. You manage to create well in that field.
Any way, this a good one.

Cheers

Outstanding, James. You know I always enjoy your "nearly-singing-but-more-like-speaking-in-a-singsong-way" songs. You floored me with this one, my friend. You have such an excellent singing voice, and quite a range singing those high notes with such clarity and unwavering tone. Love this one, James, and not just because I'm also a fan of JS Bach.

Enjoy whatever happens!

James,

It's a beautiful song with a lovely vocal and melody! I really like it when you sing! Don't worry about how many posts you have recently. You need to stay active while inspiration is striking! You are very good about graciously listening and commenting on other members work and have therefore earned the right to post as much as you want IMO! Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Torrey

Oh my word. Thank you so much.

Ray: I'm not sure how healthy it is for me, both as a songwriter and as a human being, to continually write and sing alike a lost tomcat on the roof, haha. On the other hand, I write what flows - so, if that's what needs to be written, that's what I'll write. Hopefully, though, enough of this ... even I'm getting tired of my own complaints, haha. Let's see? :-) Thanks so much, though, for your genuinely kind words.

Marty: I'm speechless. Ever so kind, as always, but especially kind, this time. I'll send you a Private Message of thanks, once I can actually find the words :-) You've reduced even a blabbermouth like me to silence, for once :-) - thank you.

Torrey: too kind. I always feel like I don't listen enough to others' songs, and fear missing small masterpieces, every time I don't hear someone's offering, simply because a) the standard here is high; and b) everyone's so versatile, so I never know what they'll come up with, next! But THANK YOU for such kind words of reassurance, and glad to see you liked the song!

James,

Nice song. Great to hear you singing...

I'm listening to your new mix. The vocal had a lot of boominess to it. Sounds like it's in the low-mids - so I'd try an EQ with 200-400 pulled down some (scooped out).

James, I'm glad you are singing as you do have a good voice.

I didn't hear the original version but this one is really good.

You vocal is a little boomy (is that a word?) and muddy in spots, however not enough to ruin the song.

The backing band was excellent.

Great song.

floyd: thanks so much for listening and commenting. I tried to pull down the 200 to 400 range in the EQs ... and the voice appears and disappears, when I do that, so that hasn't unfortunately worked ... but maybe I've reduced it too much, or something. I'll continue to play with it!

Mario: thanks for your kind words. I'll see what I can do to remove the boominess whilst preserving the effect I wanted, which was that the voice should sound a little like a cello. I'll try! Thanks again!

Nice song James. I really liked the shaker in the back. I caught myself saying, yeah man, I've been there - you drew me right in. Good job.

Lovely vocal James. Excellent lyric. The sparse backtrack was an excellent fit for your vocal. Well done
