RealTracks Artist Bio: Jelly Roll Johnson

Kirk “Jelly Roll” Johnson is a critically acclaimed, award winning harmonica player. Beginning at age 19 in Cleveland, Tennessee, from there his career has spanned 42 years. His early years were spent with a variety of blues, rock and country bands, and eventually he settled in Knoxville to work with the Tommy Cole Band, and later Con Hunley's band. In 1984 he moved to Nashville, where he has recorded with the likes of Trisha Yearwood, Etta James, Kenny Rogers, Guy Clark, Lee Ann Womack, Travis Tritt, Shania Twain, The Judds, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, and many others.

In 1998, Jelly Roll won the Nashville Music Award for Best Wind Instrumentalist, and in 2003 & 2008 he won the best Specialty Instrument Award from the Academy of Country Music.

Jelly regularly performs at Nashville’s world-famous Bluebird Cafe with hit songwriters Fred Knobloch, Thom Schuyler, and Tony Arata.
