I know the the Squire is the budget version of the full Fender and that Epiphone isthe budget version of Gibson but what is the budget version of Ovation called? A friend of mine managed to pick up a 12 string budget Ovation for just €35! It is a bit trebbley but handles very nicely. Thanks

New? For €35? Man that's a complete no-brainer! Even if you would only hang it on the wall as a decoration
A 12-string....... Too bad st. Nicolaas just left our country. Ah well, maybe next year or maybe with my birthday.

I have a vintage 1980 ovation 12 string, i seldom play it, it sound great plugged in, but to much treble unplugged. Plays fantastic though, i just hate the round back on it, very uncomfortable in the lap.

Ovation design sounds GREAT to people standing out in front of the guitar, right in its projection field.
Two things made me sell my Ovation Adamas guitar, though:
*The design projects the sound way out in FRONT of the player when attempting to play in acoustic mode. Not a problem when amplified via he internal pickup, as monitoring can override that, but when playing the darn thing acoustically with no small room wall to reflect the sound back at me, I found it hard to hear myself. Thing sounded great out in front though. But if I can't get that kind of intimate feedback from the acoustic guitar, it made the playing of the thing a bit rough, for one thing I would find myself compensating for that lack by strumming harder to play loud enough for ME to hear myself. Not cool for dynamics.
*The other problem I had was that round back.
Trying to play while seated and without a neck strap, you can't easily let go of the guitar without it trying to roll off your lap and onto the floor. That got old.
That said, the guitar recorded like a dream...

"Big guys hate round backs" That mac is why i haven't sold it yet all i use it for is to record on occasion. And it sounds great plugged in, and recorded. Very rich and sweet. Plus i have never played a better feeling 12 string.

Crafter do a nice line in ovation type guitars. In my opinion good quality guitars were never as cheap as they are now. You can get a nice electro accustic with eq built in tuner for about £129 whatever that is in $$$$

Note to the new owner - do not leave the guitar in a car in July in the northern hemisphere, December in the southern hemisphere. Wood expands quite a bit compared to the plastic bowl. I speak from personal experience with my Applause.

not only is the back rounded, that's the part of the guitar that is made of a substance that seems to have all the slippery attributes of teflon.
holding a regular guitar while sitting, you can lean into it as you play. Every Ovation I ever tried to play kept slipping off my knee gradually as I played, eventually leading to a moment when I either had to... 1) stop playing in order to regrip the instrument, or 2) musical train wreck.

I also have played Ovations that kept slipping while sitting. I have a 1984 Ovation Custom Legend 12 deep bowl. Besides being very deep it has a flatter spot on the bottom with a rough gripping surface that prevents this. After 26 years it still has not worn off at all. I did have a shallow bowl 6 string once that was impossible for me to play sitting. It was made in the 90s and had no gripping surface on the bottom. After cleaning the guitar, it was like trying to hold on to a bar of soap. It made me crazy. Wayne,

Ovation sells a non slip pad that attaches to the back of the guitar. They were available on Ebay.

Love this forum . . . who knows when and on what post you may find useful information. I also have a shallow bowl Ovation I use for arranging and a non-slip pad would be just the ticket for me. Off I go shopping!
Thanks!

You just need the no slip strips you put on concrete, one side is like sandpaper LOL.
I'd suggest krazy glue and a 'vest' might work too.

Danny,
I finally resigned myself to using a strap even while seated on both my shallow and deep bowl Ovations, which I no longer own either of them. Both of them had the "non-slip" pads factory installed. It helps a small amount, but it doesn't eliminate the problem, so don't get your hopes up about the "pads".

My Adamas had the pad on it, but my problem may have more to do with the waistline on the player being about the same roundness as the back of the guit when seated...
A skinny young fella bought my Adamas off of me, he loves it.
