I've only noticed this since I started using a higher resolution screen 2560x1440. Maybe the problem was there before but I only ever used it maximised on my old screen. Anyway, the image says it all. Can anybody replicate this?
I don't think I can help. On the PC I'm using now, my backup, I have one monitor. I clicked on that icon and thoroughly confused myself since I cannot get back to what it was without restarting the program.
This machine has your same 2560x1440 resolution monitor.
When I get a chance in a few days to try it on my main machine, with two monitors, I might have a different answer.

My screen resolution is set at the recommended 100% 1680-1050
The notation screen display on my monitor the same as your two screenshots, a 4 bar display and clicking the button, display enlarges and changes to 2 bars. Click the button again, restores the normal 4 bar screen. Repeated the process multiple times and screen display is either 4 bars or two bars.

Is it forcing a resizing of the window as well or are you trying it with the window maximised? When maximised, all is as expected but if I first make the window smaller then it suddenly stretches to the width of the screen.
