If anyone is still on Windows 7... you can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free (though it is not advertised).

https://www.zdnet.com/article/heres-how-you-can-still-get-a-free-windows-10-upgrade/

When it appeared that MS was going to automatically upgrade people to Windows 10 (which might have just been another rumor), I turned off updates, so that I would stay on Windows 7.

Recently, that computer has become unusable (not sure why and that doesn't really matter for this discussion).
I could not run any updates (to W7). Programs took 10 minutes to load.

I decided to reset the computer (from the recovery partition).
F8 was supposed to bring up the recovery screen - it would not.

I tried the steps in the above article to go to W10, but it would not run.

I managed to find a W7 recovery disc I had made when the system was new - which allowe me to get to the recovery partition - and reset to what it was when it was new (2012).
The W7 update function would not return any available updates.

I found A Youtube video (of course) that explained what to do to get the W7 updates to work
(about the 4th solution worked for me)
...and I got W7 upgraded as far as it would go (168 updates)..

I then tried the W10 upgrade and it failed with an error - which again was solved with Prof Youtube.

....and the Windows 10 upgrade "took" (a fully activated copy - from the original W7 activation)

If anyone needs it, I will answer any question I can, but keep in mind...I am not your tech support. Enter at Your Own Risk.

Good news, and you can upgrade to a clean install of Windows 11 as well, even if system requirements are not met.

I have done this on a thirteen year old PC, Windows 11 running fine.

Can't remember the exact steps as it has been a while now but this should help.

My old DAW is XP... So I reckon it's going to remain XP.

My new DAW is coming along nicely. Everything is cogitating perfectly

Thanks for sharing your journey with upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. It sounds like quite the adventure! I remember when I tackled a similar upgrade on an old laptop of mine.

It's amazing how a little persistence and some helpful YouTube tutorials can make all the difference, right? Kudos to you for figuring it out and getting everything up and running smoothly!

Oh, and speaking of upgrades, if you ever decide to take the leap to Windows 11, I found a cheap Windows 11 Pro key that might come in handy for you! Just a little something to keep in your back pocket for future tech endeavors. Thanks again for sharing your experience! "

Ensure that your PC meets the system requirements for Windows 10. You can find these on the Microsoft website, but generally, if your system runs Windows 7, it should be capable of running Windows 10.
