This is a song written and sung by Greg Allen. Greg is a songwriter in the Raleigh NC area whom I have known for a couple of years as a participant in the Raleigh NSAI chapter meetings. He's had some interesting songs and we decided to put this on into BB and see what happened.

On this:

Vocals: Greg Allen
Guitar lead & fills: Herb Hartley
Bass: 2666
Piano: 4496
Rhythm Guitar: 1985
BB R&R swing drums

BACKROADS TO YOUR HEART

Backroads To Your Heart
Greg Allen 8/7/24
Verse
It took a long time to get to you honey, it was worth every minute and mile
Took a long time to get to you baby, was a road not taken in style
I took the backroads, backroads to your heart
I took the backroad, backroads to your heart
Verse
I was focused, bound and determined, wasn’t letting you get away
I was driven, so I went a-driving, pulled into your heart that day
I took the backroads, backroads to your heart
I took the backroad, backroads to your heart
Bridge
There were twists and turns, hills and vales, kicking up gravel and sand
There were stumps and stones, rocks and rills, til I was finally holding your hand
I took the backroads, I took the backroads
Verse
You were blindsided, didn’t see me coming, I left the main road free and clear
I had a full tank, love navigated, surprise, it’s me, I’m here
I took the backroads, backroads to your heart
I took the backroads, backroads to your heart
Outro
Backroads, Backroads, Backroads.

Nice 50s-60s vibe. I like the concept - different kind of road-trip. well sung and great guitar work by Herb. It's a yes from me.

Gosh, I LOVE a bit of slap on this kind of throw back guitar lead. Crackin' song and nice vocal with a bit of throw back FX as well. The mix is sparkly and right up front. Nice one!

A toe-tapper to be sure, Herb! I just got done listening to DC Ron's Crash and Burn so I sense a theme today. Well done and great vox Greg Allen!

Love those playful 50s-like response riffs, Herb. That piano is a terrific driver. Yep, the backroads are where you'll find me. This is a good one from Greg. You guys should do more. Excellent bouncy, and fun catchy vocal --just like the backroads.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Gotta have a slap back on the guitar and a bit on the vox too for this style. Thanks for listening.

Really great job guys! Love this.

So nice to see the two of you working together. Quite the magic collab. You sound great together and Greg is really SINGING. You did an amazing job of getting that vocal out of him Herb. What a producer! I don't know if you gave him a few shots of whiskey or a Snickers bar but man it worked.

Wow. You guys should do more of these. This sounds REAL. And both modern and nostalgic at the same time, because it is every bit as good as the songs you are seeking to emulate.

I think this is sync material. More of these please.

We are always down with swing for just about any genre and this one cooks.

Nice write, vocals and your axe.

We like the open mix with lots of dynamics to accent the subtleties.

Glad you put it in BiaB and we enjoyed what emerged.

Thanks. That was the New Orleans swing rhythm piano....I couldn't find a solo track that fit. I was almost tempted to try playing the piano part myself but some technical glitches with the midi from the keyboard threw up a back roads block so I went with the guitar.

David... thanks. You heard the original version as did I. This was a fun production project. It was Greg's first time recording his own vocal in this manner. I think he had a ball working on this.

This took a few directions. Initially headed in a western swing direction but with a couple of changes it turned into rock-a-billy swing. A much better choice of direction IMHO. Thanks for listening and we're glad you enjoyed it.

Nicely produced track of your friend's song. Good work on your guitar bits and lead. That piano works as the driving force of the song. Cool sound.
