https://soundcloud.com/esa-blomberg...ium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharingA traditional folk song probably originated on a Texas prison farm. The train that inspired it may have been the Golden Gate Limited, which pulled out of Houston at midnight headed for San Fransisco. Less than an hour its "ever-lovin'" headlight shone through the prison bars, strinning fantasies of freedom. Lyrics appearing in the song were first recorded in print by Howard Odum in 1905. The song was first commercially recorded in 1926 as "Pistol Pete's Midnight Special" by Dave "Pistol Pete" Cutrell. Sam Collins recorded the song commercially in 1927 under the title "The Midnight Special Blues". Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter recorded In 1934 a version of the song at Angola Prison in Louisiana for John and Alan Lomax, who mistakenly attributed it to him as the author. In my version I sing and play the guitars and banjos (plectrum and tenor). I produced this at my home with Band in a Box and Reaper. ****** Song Summary ************* Title: Midnight Special Key=G , Tempo 120, Length (m:s)=2:50 Style is _BIGEASY.STY (Big Easy New Orleans Old and New) RealTracks used: RealTracks in style: ~1792:Tuba, DixielandMedium Sw 110 RealTracks in style: 2165:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm NewOrleansSwinginPop Sw 130 RealTracks in song: 3315:Vocal Mmms, Background RockNRollGospel12-8Tenor1Dbl Sw 065 (1TrackVocalSection) RealTracks in song: 3322:Vocal Mmms, Background RockNRollGospel12-8BariDbl Sw 065 (1TrackVocalSection) RealTracks in song: 3323:Vocal Mmms, Background RockNRollGospel12-8BassDbl Sw 065 (1TrackVocalSection) RealDrums in style:NewOrleansShuffle^04-a:Kick Shuffle , b:Ride, Shuffle

Wow, the beginning was weird but I always like to acknowledge creativity. Once it settled in, a fine rendition. Sounded good on all fronts. Well done.

Yes indeed.... That's a unique intro. I was kinda digging it though. It had that "bottom of the jailhouse pile" groove.
CCR was my introduction to this song.

Much obliged for your comments. In the intro tried to sing as I imagined an inmate would sing. It begun to sound like one of my favourites Tom Waits and I kept it - not taking this hobby of mine too seriously. I also heard this song first time from CCR. In one music sheet it's even credited to John C. Fogerty. Many artists have taken this way folk songs from Bob Dylan to John Lennon.

Maybe I'm the only one, but I LOVE your intro, it raises expectations and is a great contrast to the Elvis-esque main song. I would probably up the tempo a bit to make it a real rocker, but I really enjoyed my listen ![[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]](https://www.pgmusic.com/forums/images/icons/default/thumbs_up.gif)

Nice to get at least one, who loved my intro. Maybe you also share my taste of making covers not trying to copy the originals, but to bring something new.

Arri, nicely crafted cover. Good use of BiaB instruments, particularly like the seldom-heard tuba. Nice playing as always, too.

Wow. Your cover of Sound of Silence was even better than the original! Where you get the so fine vocals?

Wow. Your cover of Sound of Silence was even better than the original! Where you get the so fine vocals? The vocals are made with Synthesizer VIt's like the piano roll editor for MIDI instruments, but instead of just entering notes, you also enter the lyrics, where syllables start and end, which syllables are emphasized and all that. Basically the complete prosody. And of course it outputs a vocal sound, not a synthesizer sound

Arri, I saw this post a few days a go, and couldn't wait to hear this on the studio speakers. WOW, well worth the wait. I've played and recorded this song so many times, but I knew (hoped) you'd be doing a cool banjo version. YEP! So good. Like the pic of Huddie too. Great mention of the history of the song too. You even managed a few verses I haven't heard before. Much fun, Arri. Well done.
