https://soundcloud.com/jim-gear/dreamy-daze?si=050a6ebd17034cec99ab4c88ab3ef3fd&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharingThis is my latest song. I have been on a "Yacht Rock" musical journey the last few months and I guess it rubbed off a little in the writing and production of the tune. Its aptly named "Lazy Daze", as it has a dreamy laid back island vibe. The production is all RealTracks except for my lead vocals and harmonies. I mixed and edited in Reaper. Lazy Dazeby jim gear I'm no fake, understand Pump your brake, while letting your head expand Just trust in your mellow side I bake, on the sand Half awake, oblivious to the ways of man i'm just out of reach of the tide Did I mention the moon Coming up too soon to carry us away Did I mention the moon Lazy Daze (I got the disease now) Lazy Daze (I'm down on my knees now) Come stroll on the beach, fade'n the heat Just dreaming the days away And I think, everything gon be allright Did I mention the moon Coming up too soon It's been such a lovely day Did I mention the moon There's gonna be days When I just can't seem to find the answer Just let the ocean be my private dancer Dance on the waves Lazy Daze (catchin' the breeze now) Lazy Daze (down on the breeze now Lazy Daze (catchin the breeze now) Lazy Daze (down on my knees now) ****** Song Summary ************* Title: Lazy Daze File:autoload.SGU Key=F#m, Tempo 90, Length (m:s)=1:43 No intro. 35 bar chorus, from bar 1 to bar 35. Hi there Jim, What a nice song! I like the breathy vocals, the harmonies, the understated islander sound. The only thing that got "stuck in my craw" so to speak is the line "I got the disease". Frankly, my mind went to some sorry sod catching something from an island prostitute. The rest is so easy, breezy and sets the scene well though.

BYOBand, thanks for having a listen. I’m happy you enjoyed my song. I debated the “disease” line and actually changed it only to change it back in the final version. Having the “lazy disease” is a very common colloquial expression where I come from and have lived my whole life and it just felt very genuine in the context of the song. Thank you again for your kind comments. Jim

Hey, Jim. Yep, think you've caught the Yacht Rock disease. Cool tune. Great BiaB backing track with some unique sounds, especially in the opening. Really nice vocals and harmonies. Might suggest a fade ending since you're appropriately repeating the theme over and over during the last section. Nicely done!

Hi Jim! A really good melodic and listenable song. It reminded me of the style of Jack Johnson - not sure if that was because of the singing style, lyrical theme, harmonies or genre - and a very good example of the music and lyrics being as one.
The line cliche I - Imaj7 - I7 - IV is the gift that keeps on giving, both in your song and in many others. It still sounds unique in your hands.
I looooove reggae and there is never enough of it going around. Great use of harmonies also - it would be good to hear from you to unpack why and how you used vocal harmonies in different parts of the song. Andrew D

Andrew Dee, Thanks for the kind comment. I truly appreciate the feedback. I like a little island feel to my music as well. I love Jack Johnson, btw. The harmony choices are pretty much in most of my songs. I try to leave space in my songs so that each part is free to make its own statement. Thanks again for listening and commenting.

Nice production. I really like your voice, it has a lot of character. I can hear you doing a whole different genre than yacht rock. You might do well as a Bryan Ferry-type fronting Roxy Music, for instance. Just throwing that out there.

TuneMonger, Thanks for taking the time to have a listen and leave a comment. I’m a Bryan Ferry fan from way back so thanks for the comparison. I have recordings in several different vocal styles. I just try to use the ones that fit the mood of the song. Sometimes it works. Again, thanks for stopping by.

Oh, yeah, this one is perfect for the island feel. SO well done, Jim. Love the vocal and harmony. This is kind of music to have plugged into your ears while walking on the beach, or just sipping margaritas in the shade.

Hi Jimj,
It's nice to hear another one from you.
I've always enjoyed your vocals - they're definitive but not intrusive. They blend perfectly with the backing tracks. That can be a tricky balance, but you always seem to find the perfect. Blend.
I loved this line: "Let the ocean be my private dancer." That's an excellent choice of words that says more than their generic, individual connotations. Sweet!
Thanks for a most delightful listen.
Alan

Alan,
I am humbled by your very kind message. I love good melodies and harmonies. I try my best to have them sit naturally in the arrangement. I’m glad you approve. I went back and forth on the “private dancer” line, ultimately deciding to leave it in because it was pure and innocent and fit the mood perfectly. Again, thank you for stopping by and having a listen

Jim, you put me in the island mood for something with rum in it! (While we were in the Caribbean every drink had rum in it!) You really captured that island feel. Great vocal and groove Outstanding mix Loved it.
