I've just pitch shifted a wav file up a perfect 4th and I think it sounds ok but I read in the Pro Audio
manual about artifacts appearing if pitch shifted too far. What should I be listening for and is a 4th
too far.

Many thanks.

A Fourth *may* be pushing it. A lot has to do with the quality of the source material.

You would hear slight anamolies or artifacts. Things may sound a little 'flangey' or such.

Listen closely and decide. The new Elastique stretch algo is pretty good.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Thanks for the flange effect clue rharv. I now have an idea of what to listen for.

I think the stretch feature is really good as well.

I'm not sure of the source material,it was given to me on a CD. I think it is from an itunes download. It was too low for my young singer so I shifted it for her. She does song & dance at the local dance school and I teach her to sing the songs.

I listened to before and after and it seemed ok so I wont try to push it any further.

Thanks again.

Elastique is about as good as it gets for pitch and time stretching. I agree that a 4th is pushing the envelope for what works without being distracting. I wouldn't bank on it to teach pitch and intervals, to be honest.

I should have been more specific in my post. I always teach songs from notated sheet music never from just listening to CDs. I mainly teach piano but I also have a few singing students from the dance school. The only music given to me is on CD so I end up searching for the sheet music (or trying to transcribing it by ear) and then I notate it and print it out so I can teach the correct pitch, rhythm etc.

This particular song is way too low for my singer (lowest note E below middle C) so I needed to take the pitch up without altering the length of the music otherwise it would mess up the dance steps.

This was the first time I had a go at the Time Stretch function and was really pleased with the result but was not sure if I had pushed it too far. There may be a slight tremolo-ish sound to the strings but at least it's better than wrecking a young voice. It really needs to go up another tone but I wont try to push it anymore.

Must say thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it. The more I can learn the better.

This is a great forum!
