Just curious as to the rules about copyrighted material.
My latest CD will be released within a week or two and there are a couple songs that I've covered. Also a couple of traditional songs that I've done my own arrangement of.

For the cover songs I have paid for and received mechanical licensing for each.

I'm assuming that it would be okay to post them?

Thank you!

Steve,

You'll probably get more response to your question if it was posted in the Off Topic forum.

My limited understanding of paying mechanical rights is that it gives one permission to use material on CDs. Putting those songs on the web is most likely not covered as it's a different medium.

You mention that you've also got some traditional songs on the CD. If those songs are in public domain, it's safe to post them here.

Hope this helps,
Noel

As long as you have the mechanicals paid for, you're good on the covers. Unless the mec license specifies where you can and can;t use the song... I would assume you are good to post it on line..... but you might want to double check on that because I think they now have a specific on line license for streaming tunes.

the traditionals, if they are PD no problem.... just do be sure they are PD.

Even if you buy a "mechanical license" that does not mean that you have "all rights to the song" which as I read the header to this forum is required to post here. I have many "covers" that we have done and bought licenses for but I've never posted one here (wish I could). I think the intent of the site is to encourage original music and or arrangements of traditional music. A song that is truly in the Public Domain (takes research) can be "owned" by you as though it was your original. When you buy a mechanical license to cover a song you do not own the song although you can copy protect your arrangement of it. And FWIW, my reference base is the US of A.

yes ^^^^^ on a PD song you can copyright your version. Anyone else can still record that song, but your recorded version is protected from duplication and sale by your copyrighted version.

If you are unsure if a song is PD you can contact the Harry Fox Agency and they can tell you. They may have an online research tool as well... you would need to do your footwork to be sure.
