Hello Peter and staff,

We were wondering, since we composed some songs with the program One Man Band 10 in the past, whether it might be possible to create some kind of support for Yamaha PSR styles in Biab? (Or maybe some sort of converter (PSR to Biab style)

Also, PSR styles have some build in intro's an breaks (usually with some variations too). Is it possible to add that option to Biab styles?

Third, both the program One Man Band, as well as Yamaha arranger keyboards, have the intelligent arranger function: you play a chord on your midi keyboard and all instruments on all midi channels follow (play) automatically. We know that you can enter chords in the lead sheet in Biab by playing chords on your midi keyboard, but that's not quite the same.

We think these features might appeal to lots of users.

Kind regards,
Rob and Anne-Marie

This wish comes from time to time.
BIAB is not designed to be a realtime arranger. As you know it relies on a chord sheet you have entered previously. In MIDI mode, BIAB chooses patterns to be played among a bank of patterns according some rules :duration of the chords, next degree, same root, chord type, etc... Rules that can't apply in realtime because you know the chords frame of a song but BIAB don't.

I have never played a real time arranger but am I right in thinking that the styles sound really hoaky compared with BIAB? The beauty of BIAB is that it is pre-programed to produce the best possible arrangement and there is a randomness built into the song generation.

There are lots of other areas for PG to devote their resources to without adding to or changing the basic BIAB concept.

Tony, a big +1 on that statement!

Tony, I've heard some very convincing arranger keyboards. User Mike K (Kohlgraf) used to divide his work between keyboard and BIAB, at least until Real Tracks came along. I'm not sure what he does these days.

A good thing about the keyboards is that you can jam in real time, which is what he and I did. BIAB's strength is that it can pull off far more complex arrangements, AND you can take them into RealBand or other DAWs and embellish them further.

Mike doesn't appear to have posted here in a while, but I found some of his work on Mixposure and Reverb Nation. The Mixposure stuff sounds a little dated (as in recorded a while back; nothing wrong with the music), but his production was always so good that I could never tell what he was using (he also worked with live musicians) unless he told me.

Richard

P.S.: The first appearance of the words "Mixposure" and "Reverb Nation" are links, if you would like to listen.

Tony, my experience is that you are right about the sound, for all the reasons John-Luke very nicely explained. Still, this is a frequent and popular request and we should encourage all users to express their wishes here. Then it's up to PG Music to decide where they want to devote resources. Who knows what they will come up with?

Thanks for the responses.
As for a hoaky sound, that is not entirely true. Many of the Yamaha PSR styles sound pretty good, and they also have pre-programmed intro's, breaks and endings (in multiple variations).
The only downside is that they don't feature real(wave)styles, just midi.
I appreciate that real time arranging won't be possible with real styles. But it definitely should be possible with midi styles.
Real time arranging can definitely help in the process of composing songs. It's much more intuitive than typing chords into a chordsheet.
Here's an example of a song composed with One Man Band using PSR styles (in OMB you can use both the real time arranger function as well as the type in chords - similar to Biab - feature).
Pay special attention to the intro which was a built in PSR intro:

Rob

Hi Matt

I couldn't disagree more.

One of the reasons BIAB has such a bloated GUI and a plethora of confusing features is that PG has been too ready to listen to so many pet ideas from users. They have suffered from "too much democracy syndrome" The most successful companies and products are those that have a leadership that stays focused on their vision and their strengths. BIAB has ended up as a program designed by a committee. It cannot be all things for all people.

I see where your coming from Tony - surely the point is to code properly in the first place. No need to curtail free speech in the forum though IMO. "Bloated GUI and plethora of features" - I certainly agree. Simple things like playing a VST along with a song, are quite ridiculously conceived and implemented.

This is true but only to a point. Other software companies have successfully integrated suggestions and pet wishes from its customers without the chaos that is apparent in BiaB. Most of them have had a couple of total rewrites during the entire time that PGMusic has used a band-aid approach.

BiaB has benefited by user suggestions and I wish this to continue however I totally agree with you that a total rewrite with both 64 and 32 bit versions is desperately needed.
