Actually...that's just how the original is! It's almost awkward, but I dug it the first time I heard it. (forget almost it is awkward!)
The drummer is dead on. The piano is a shade behind, and the bass is a shade behind that! It happens each verse.
It was strange to get used to, now I can't picture it any other way. (Shades of Monk!!!)

Like I said in my response, I have been known to miss the point of some music style, especially if I am not familiar with that style, therefore I guess I just don't get it.
