Hi All, Here's a simple little song that I started many years ago and then picked up again in January of this year. The lyric was originally based on a flight that I was on that David Bowie also happened to be on - I recently finished this write with inspiration from David Snyder's "Earth Odyssey". The song is called There Goes Major Tom. I wanted to give this a real loose early 70s Lou Reed feel. The instrumentation is a mix of BIAB/RTs, an old Roland drum machine and a guitar loop that I built using my Gretsch 6130 - recorded & mixed in GarageBand. Style: BEATBOX.STY: 2474: Bass, Acoustic, Held Ev 085 1943: Synth, Rhythm, EuroDance Strings Ev 120 2267: Synth, BellPad, Rhythm 80sPopPads Ev 085 587: Sax, Tenor, 2-Beat Rock Ev 110 Other: Roland TR-707 Drum Track Gretsch Guitar Loop Thanks for listening! Bob

Oh My God, great!!! Ha ha ha!! This is so cool that the members of the forum are feeding off of one another and generating tons of great material. It's like a virtual edition of the "Wrecking Crew" from back in the day, hanging out in the studio and slinging riffs and tunes. It doesn't get any better!! Great song Bob! I am smiling ear to ear!!

Hi Bob,
It's the rare songwriter who has the confidence to depart from the safe formulas and try something different, but lately it's been your modus operandi. When I say this song reminded me of Paul Simon's "50 ways to leave your lover", I don't mean it sounded like it in any way. But when that song came out it seemed so different to me than any of the cookie cutter songs that were being played along with it on the radio. It's like he decided to abandon the "rules" and follow his muse... and it worked!
Likewise here, you've replaced the usual melody with a fairly monotone dialog, reminiscent of a poetry reading to a musical background. Two chords, alternating a verse of poetry and a verse of sax... I love the way the drum cadence drives the lyrical syllables.
As usual, your lyrics are very poetic! It would never occur to me to try something like this, but you make it work! I'm very impressed! And as David says, it's good to see various forum songwriters inspiring one another!

Bob,
When I listen to your songs, I like to close my eyes and just let your lyric images fade in and out of my mind as the song develops. This one is a great visual journey! It worked for me!
Regards, Noel

"It's like a virtual edition of the "Wrecking Crew" from back in the day..."
Really cool what David said.
To us everything comes down to what Noel mentioned "I like to close my eyes and just let your lyric images fade in and out of my mind as the song develops"
The delivery and the imagery are amazingly effective.
You are, indeed, on a heckuva roll!

Bob, very poetic lyrics and the talking delivery was the perfect choice. Your backing tracks and production values are through the roof lately. Very enjoyable. Tom

Bob, You really captured a cool vibe. It makes me think about the old beatnik dives from the 50s. Nice job SD

Bob,
As you know, I like talking songs about as much as watching paint dry... BUT this is REALLY cool! Love the lyrics and I think you nailed the effect you were after.
Great job!
