That's a timeless gospel classic. Well done.

So... I have a question and a comment. Not in that order necessarily.

Is that "The Paul" that Gibson made?

That guitar in the photo looks like a guitar Gibson made for a short time in the early 80's. It was simply called "The Paul" and came fitted with hotter pickups... black, if I recall correctly, just like the guitar in your picture. It had a fatter tone due to those pickups. It was a few hundred dollars less than a "real" Les Paul and a few pounds lighter too.

When my SG was stolen the first time (see my post on that story elsewhere in the forums) The Paul was the guitar I bought. I really liked that guitar for the slightly hotter gain it had.

Here's a picture of the band with me playing that "Paul"

This was our publicity photo that was taken with my SG... the same one that was stolen.

My SG was lighter and has a much thinner neck and cleaner pickups. The Paul was heavier, with a fatter neck and super distortion pickups. Not that it couldn't be clean, it's just that it got dirty faster as you tuned in up a bit. Especially with a Mesa Boogie amp.

Later, when the band finally crashed and burned, I traded that Paul for some other gear. Kinda wish every now and then that I had been sane enough to keep it.

We've heard that song all of our lives. From acappella versions to instrumentals of many styles. For both of us it's a very early musical memory....perhaps a southern thing??

You did a fine job of capturing the melody which is indeed a most memorable one.

Thanks for sharing!!

Very sweet Scott!! It is a beautiful melody, and I'd say you played it with "Amazing Grace". I like the way you deviated a bit at times. You have such a sweet style of playing. Enjoyed it a bunch!! Take care. Greg

Beautiful playing, and we will check out that artist folder too.

Thanks Rob for checking out the song. I didn't use my strat on this song. The guitar is a Les Paul Jr Special meaning it has two pickups. The guitar was in very bad shape when I got it. I stripped it down to the bare wood and refinished it dark stain and a thin lacquer finish. I also had to replace the pickup switch and volume pots. The pickups are P100's which is a stacked humbucker. This has a very different sound. Almost like a very warm single coil pickup.

"Amazing Grace" is one of my most favorite American songs.
A very nice instrumental version of it.
Very beautiful guitar tone and very lyrical playing.
As Robert said, recognizable as having that Scott feel, definitely.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Thanks Bob for checking out the song. You are right I use a touch of delay and a bit of compression.

Hi Herb Thank you for the awesome comments. I really enjoyed seeing your pictures and the story about your two guitars.

Yes this guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Special SL. It was produced in 98. It is on the lowerer end cost of the Les Pauls. It is based off the Les Paul JR with two pickups. The SL stands for Sans Lacquer. Which makes it cheaper to produce (poly). One of the previous owners took paint stripper to it and messed it up pretty bad. When I got it I spent about 4 days hand sanding it to the original wood. I stained it with a red mahogany and it turned out quite dark. I put about 20 coats of lacquer on it. I thought it had P90's in it when I bought it but it turned out to be P100's. I had replace the volume pots and the pickup switch. The end result is what you heard in the song. It sound is between a strat single coil and a hot humbucker. Very unique sound.

Love this, Scott. Those soapbars really sing -- I also wouldn't have expected that guitar tone out of a Paul! Great job, though. A beautiful take on a classic.
