And then there is what you can do with a classical guitar, detuned and then lead line played on same guitar. I did this as an experiment some years back as part of the February Album Writing Month. Guitar was a $150 solid cedar top 'valencia' model which really digs being tuned down significantly. Pickup came in the guitar from a company called Shadow. The bass line, rhythm guitar and lead were all that Valencia model.
