The Mac OS has made this impossible since 10.11 El Capitan. Developers were supposed to stop letting apps write there since Lion 10.7. This happened from downloads? Yikes! Not what I expected. New install or upgrade? Did you install anywhere other than the default locations? Did you install to a drive other than your boot drive? Are the disk images from the installers still visible after the installation?
