Check out the Mackie MR5 speakers. That's what I bought for my monitoring system. I paid $300 for the pair many years ago.

Sweetwater has them for $120 each. Mackie MR-5 LINK

They sound good and when used with a sub, you even have a really fat low end. However, the sub isn't needed, but it does make a nice case of ear candy.

Certainly worth a look.
