First, welcome to the forum flagman.

Second, this does happen from time to time. Have you tried re-booting? I currently have 3 laptops running and have had numerous desktops and other laptops in my time. Of the 3 laptops I currently have running, 1 simply will not recognise CDs of any kind anymore (blank or not) and 1 is highly selective as to what it will read/write. I only have 1 that I can really rely on. I have tried lens cleaners but they have rarely made much difference.

You do not state whether your problem is occurring on a desktop or a laptop (not that it makes any difference these days) but before you rush out to replace the CD drive, try a couple of different CD types (music, data, pre-recorded, blank) and different manufacturers. Sorry to say but CD drives (even in CD players) are prone to dieing in my experience
