I run across two software AU / VST plug-ins that should be useful to users with little to no knowledge of how to use effects to change the sound of a track. Both plug-ins are by software company Abletunes. One plug-in available for free while the second is a paid product. The plug-ins are available for both 32 and 64 bit Mac and Windows computer operating systems. +++ Abletune Knobs +++ are single knob plug-in effects that combine the functionality of several effects into one knob. Each name describes the overall sound the plug-in effect changes. The three knobs are Drive, Space and Attack. This plug-in is a free download. +++ EQ-Wise +++ is an eight band equalizer with a few tricks up it's sleeve that greatly enhances it's usefulness. Trick one is to have a pop-up window that can be resized and positioned as needed. Trick 2 is to have the audio displayed as a real time frequency graph in the background with the equalizer functions in the foreground. This lets you visually observe, in real time what effect any change you make has on the audio. Finally, there are overlays that describes the change each band has on specific instruments or just in general. I really can't explain how brilliant an idea this plug-in is for people new to mixing. The video helps but I should also point out the manual is available separately for download. This plug-in costs $49 US

EQ-Wise looks great! Having a frequency analyzer built into an EQ is useful, one of my favourite features of FabFilter Pro-Q, which is much more expensive and doesn't have those labels overlaid telling you what the different frequencies do.

EQ-Wise looks impressive. I can imagine this being a very useful tool for improving speed in the audio engineering stage. The visual feedback introduces an excellent approach.

Free is good but that $49 E-Q is nice too.
The more I investigate the E-Q the more impressed I am. It seems to be designed to give the user data the same way a mentor would if you had one standing behind you. I also like that they stress over and over that the presets are starting points and encourage trial and error investigation. The concept seems to be well implemented.
