There are only 5 black keys, so they're a gapped pentatonic scale. So you can look at them as being a scale missing some key notes. Which scale you consider it to be depends on root note of the scale. That Eb pentatonic scale - Eb Gb Ab Bb Db - functionally an Ebmin7 - is basically an Eb blues scale, contrasting the minor flavor of the scale against the major scale of the harmony. Which, as you said, sounds pretty cool.  That makes my hair hurt. I don't speak that talk but admire those who do! Bud
