This is clearly a product with applications that would be useful to BIAB and Real Band. A few posts about it have appeared randonly already in the main forum. Since a new version of it has been released recently, it seemed like a good idea to start this post in the off-topic forum so information can be shared by those who have it.

Based on what I've read, I think Melodyne and Real Band are a natural complement, and I'd like to see the two products team up somehow.

Pat,
Haven't looked at the latest Melodyne, I keep meaning to upgrade my version, but I don't use it, so it's not really that important to me. Melodyne is primarily for vocalists. PG Music did include the TC Helicon application with Band In A Box and Power Tracks Pro Audio for a while, giving you much of the same capabilities.

Pro Tools, in their factory bundle, was offering the 'Essentials' version, which Peter might be able to negotiate a deal on. However, I don't really see that it has a lot of features that I would use, since I can't sing well enough to even allow Melodyne to do it's job.

Many times after generating a real track, I've wished it were possible to edit it in some way... stretch the duration of the notes,or edit the actual notes themselves to fix passages that weren't quite what I wanted. It is my understanding that Melodyne can do both of those things. Can TCHelicon do either? I'ver never used the plugin, but I do have TCHelicon hardware which basically pitch corrects and adds harmonies. Those are cool things to do (and melodyne can do both of those things too, I believe) .. but the ability to edit audio in the same ways that MIDI can be edited would REALLY open up some possibilities. It would immediately remove the primary objection the MIDI enthusiasts have against the real tracks: inability to edit the contents of the real tracks

This looks like it could be very useful if the description is correct. This sounds like we can take a Real Track or Real Drum part and actually edit it. It says it exports as a midi file so apparently it does what that old Namm demo video showed, converts the individual audio hits to midi. How many times have we seen a forum post asking if it's possible to do a pitch to midi conversion and everybody's said no not yet? I would love to hear from somebody who has done it with our Real Tracks and can post an example.
Note the system requirements though. I have a single core P4 2.8, I guess it's time to upgrade...

Pat,
You can take individual notes and move them with Melodyne, not something you can do with the TC Helicon. I've done with with a clarinet, and it works quite well, actually. And that was with the Essentials package.

I can't find the post anymore, but just recently somebody posted here on the PG Music forums that he was doing exactly that... using Melodyne to massage his real tracks in RB.. which is what sent me to melodyne's web site to read about the latest version. It really looks to me like RB and Melodyne should collaborate in some way... even if they only offered crossgrade discounts to cash in on each others' customer base.. ANY cooperation would be synergistic

I'd like to see a hybrid product that includes the automated track generation of RB and the audio editing capability of melodyne

There may be samples on the melodyne web site... I'm pretty sure I've seen videos there.

I know what you mean about the computer upgrade. :-( Me too.

if you go to YOUTUBE and type MELODYNE, you'll get enough videos to keep you busy for a week. Here's one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4YEebBN2ok

And I want to emphasize that I'm only posting this here because I think that PGMUSIC and MELODYNE have both recently changed the way music is made, and their respective breakthroughs happen to be mutually empowering. Many of the objections people have made about real tracks become moot points in light of what melodyne brings to the equation.

In the past, I felt like the left-brain technical requirements of making music interfered with the right brain creativity... but these two products are unique in that they are so intuitive that they can be effectively used when I am in "right brain" creative mode. Sonar, on the other hand, ALWAYS pushes me into left-brain mode, and I'm not quite sure why.

Melodyne is also good for making harmony parts. You can take your voice and move it up or down the scale. You can also take a midi part and move it up or down to suit your voice and then save and reload in biab or pt.

Hi,

Not sure if you are all aware, but there is a better program available that handles multiple part editing with ease, and sounds great too. It's a whole other notch above Melodyne, with a price to match. Check it out>

Pretty Amazing stuff.

Yes, that's pretty cool but $1,700 Euro's?? That plus the high cost of a top end Mac, you're looking at 6-7 G's just for the software and that monitor. If you're going to talk about stuff in that price range there's lot's of cool jaw dropping things out there.
I don't know if it's that much better than Melodyne though, he said it's shipping this summer but that's pretty much what Melodyne said too at the time. They were showing what appeared to be the exact same thing at the NAMM show two years ago that caused such a stir. They were extracting individual instruments out of full multitrack arrangements too but that is still not available either.
I think this stuff is great, give it a few years and it'll be included on one of those freebie disc's from Electronic Musician. Uhhh, probably not but we can dream...

€1,700 and MAC only?? What are they thinking? Plus he stated 1-2GB for one minute of Audio? I think they need to have a re-think
