This is exactly what it says on the tin. I am looking to pick up BIAB as a recording/arrangement tool and would like some advice on how to use it that way, with the complicating factor that my own vocals will have to be recorded in a one-bedroom apartment. (What I'll actually be able to do depends on how my GoFundMe does, which will among other things decide which version of the software I'll be buying).

Does anyone doing work in this software now know what they would do in my situation?

Here are a few ideas:

Record as much as you can direct.

You can make a dead space for recording by hanging furniture blankets and putting a rug down.

Mixing may be tough. There are some articles about mixing with headphones but it's tricky. You may want to find out when your neighbors go to work and mix then.

I'm sure the forum members will have some good ideas.

For starters: 1) send out the wife, dog and neighbors 2) get a mic 3) maybe some headphones too?
Actually there's a lot more needed to get you going ...

I have found many, many answers to your questions at www.recordingrevolution.com. Best feature of this site is he explains how to do recordings with what you have instead of dwelling on the equipment they are trying to sell.

The Rec Rev can be accessed, well huge chunks of it, on Utub.
Besides BIAB what do you plan to use when recording?
Voice? Guitar? Keyboard? Acoustic drums? An outline would assist.
Almost anything can be recorded directly into your interface & comp with the right set up.
If you're happy with BIAB then I assume you'll be happy with amp sims etc.
Computer with specs to run your DAW & BIAB, good condenser Mic (NOT USB), decent cables, basic interface, decent closed back ear covering headphones and a DAW you know how to use are the starting points.
I started cDAW based with less -
basic computer, gaming audio card, patch cable to plug guitar/bass into the Aux or mic in socket & Cakewalk 9.3.
With that basic set up, a cassette recording of vocals and drums recorded elsewhere I managed to get this done...

I've done this many times. First don't use Biab for the recording part, use Real Band which is included. Biab only has one audio track available while RB is a full DAW with 48 tracks plus it will generate Biab parts. This allows you to do multiple takes of your vocals for example then you cut/paste the best parts of those tracks to make your final vocal track. Start reading the Real Band forum.

Otherwise, recording in an apartment is pretty obvious. Get used to everybody's schedules around you and then you schedule your recordings around them. I never had any problems with mixing, everybody has home theater sound systems so I would hear my neighbors watching a movie all the time. If I can hear them I don't care if they can hear me doing my mixes either as long as it's not too extreme. Forget headphones. I only use cans to check the mix not to do the mixing itself. You need a decent set of studio monitors.

If you're concerned about disturbing your neighbors, consider a microphone acoustic isolation shield. They're really for reducing sound reflections getting back to the mic, but they do that by absorbing the sound of your vocals.

Bob describes the technical/social aspects really well. I'd consider going to a more sophisticated DAW like Cakewalk Sonar. It's free. With upgrades, I paid thousands of dollars for Sonar over the years before it was free, and it was totally worth it. It is much more capable than Real Band, EXCEPT Sonar does not have BiaB integration. BiaB's DAW mode and/or the new plugin makes up for this in my opinion. Good luck!

Not a problem,.,,,,, add some cans to that list and you don't make any noise except for your singing..... do that before everyone else gets into bed.... IOW... no 3am sessions.

It's totally possible to do everything in the box. A number of my songs are 100% in the box and using cans. I used to have 2 girls in the room next to mine. They didn't appreciate my music after they went to bed. Even my guitar is in the box. Use a POD2.
