I think there exists the intangible being whether the player thinks he/she is playing a wrong note.
A subconscious reaction causing a millisecond of hesitation or simple reducing the "commitment" to that note?

It seems as skill and knowledge of melody/harmony expand in this lifelong journey, our willingness to explore and assimilate these outside notes and harmonies expands.

Our hesitancy to play them decreases. Commitment to these new sounds increase.
We begin to appreciate that new sound.
We look for others.

that is indeed a beautiful thing.

But that's just me where I'm at on this musical journey.
