12 Strings and Friends I am so far out of my comfort zone on this one if I were playing left field I would be behind the wall in the parking lot; a baseball reference for my non-American friends. BiaB style - Horizon MIDI New Age Piano Pop Tempo - 90 BPM I deleted the guitar and bass tracks. Drums - Seven Slate's SSD-5 - Designer - Cut Ya kit Piano - EZKeys2 - Session Grand - Basic Strings - Kontak - Amadeus - Full String Ensemble I am playing my acoustic 12 string guitar Via my breath and keyboard controllers: Bassoon - copied and raised an octave for the oboe Cello Violin - copied and lowered and octave for the viola French horn - wrote the 2nd (harmony) part Via my keyboard controller: Basses - Kontakt - Amadeus - basses Brass - horn stabs - Amadeus - full brass ensemble As always all comments are welcomed.

Comfort zone is for wimps The intro reminds me a bit of “Peter and the Wolf”, and then it gets kinda classical. For my taste the drums make it a bit too experimental, I would prefer a version without them to make it more atmospheric.

Mario,
You are forever creating new sounds that are so pleasant. You might be out of your comfort zone, but it certainly doesn't seem like it. I do agree with B.D. that it might be more ethereal minus the drums. But it's your song - you get to call the shots.
I ALWAYS love your musical experiments. Really nice, my friend.

Ha! This sounds GREAT! Reminds me of "Bolero" on an acid trip, not that I'm an expert on either "Bolero" or acid trips. Wonderful composition, and the usual great playing on all real and virtual instruments. The 12-string is a treat as are the duet sections. Love the swirling string pad, too. A super cool tune!

Hello Mario Overall, I like the composition. There are some dissonances in the layering of instruments, but that may be a deliberate choice that doesn't bother me. The drums are a bit time-consuming, but I like this avenue of experimentation. Laurent

Mario,
"if I were playing left field I would be behind the wall in the parking lot' No, you are at third snagging hot line drives with ease! In other words, you know what you are doing and making it sound great! When the nylon sounding guitar came in, it really made the song come alive to me! Nice work! TB

My ears are saying, "what???" and yet, I love the exploration of harmony and dissonance. There are themes in here that you could pull out and play with futher for sure. The playfulness reminds me a lot of Porpoise Song by the Monkees (who pretty much stole the idea from the Beatles, I think).

I had a difficult time with the drums as in should I include them or not. I ended including them to make the song not as atmospheric as my other songs. Possibly I made a big mistake.

The drums are a bit time-consuming, but I like this avenue of experimentation. Laurent Thanx Laurent. I tried to incorporate some dissonances then resolve them. Hopefully that resolution came across. I had a hard time with the drums, i.e. keep them or not. Maybe I should have left them out.

Way back in 1970 - I was 19 - I was with a UK and a Spanish friend and they were reading some poetry I'd then written. When I asked them what they thought about it, the Spanish friend adopted a very intellectual look and said, "It's very, very syncretic." We laughed as we thought he'd made up the word - it was years before we discovered it was an actual English word - and he also thought he'd made it up. After that we always used the term to mean something we didn't really have any words to describe. So thus:
Mario, your new instrumental "12 Strings and Friends" is extremely artful and syncretic, plus the opening with the bassoon - cunningly crafted fro the oboe - wonderfully accentuates the metaphor of the whole. Good show!
PS: I love oboes and bassoons! Why are there none in BiaB? And by crikey, where are the balalaikas I ordered?! How can I make syncretic soup without balalaikas?!
Some favourite Waoist Adages: #1: Play on the Way. #13: Ask not for whom the flower blooms, it blooms for you. #58: Bring consciousness to it. #63: On the road to effortlessness, effort must be made. #92: Be Love Now, the rest will come on its own.

I guess I did attempt a syncretic song as I tried to blend a couple of different genres in this one. A little research showed that your balalaikas has just left Russia and should arrive at you place in a year or two!

Just writing a 3 chord 12 bar blues puts me outa my comfort zone. I can't imagine the skill necessary to produce something like this. You must put together a storyboard to plan it all out. DC said, "Reminds me of 'Bolero' on an acid trip, not that I'm an expert on either "Bolero" or acid trips" Nailed! The instrumental smorgasbord, the textures, layers and nuances are overwhelming ... in a good way. Wow, J&B

Very good Mario!
You had me at 12 string!
So yeah I really love the 12 string part and then how everything else starts to build on top of it.
To me this is just an excellent composition, the kind of thing you might hear from someone like John McLaughlin and one of his ensembles.
Just really nice extremely well orchestrated music. Really enjoyed it a lot.

Hi Mario. It's a very interesting arrangement. Kept my interest, anyway. I agree partly with the drum comments but you obviously have a plan in mind. Carry on experimenting, I say.

Your many skills continue to impress. The piece sounds complex. I like the traditional instruments. I don't think I've heard anything like here on the forum. I want to hear more like this.

Ah, I coached baseball for 17 years, and I would write you in the lineup card playing left and hitting cleanup every time, Mario. You sound comfortable in spite of your game face. I'd say your comfort zone encompasses the whole field of music. This one is in the pocket of your glove. It's amazing what you can do with your keyboard.

I wouldn't say that I was comfortable with this one. This one took a lot of work.

Mario, Cool experiment. Lots of sound Very emotional piece. I think drums are hidden a bit too deep in the mix. Thank you for sharing, Misha.

The drums were that hardest part of the song for me. Should I keep them or not? If I keep them were do they fit in the mix? I have received all kinds of suggestions like dump them, change them, make them louder, etc. Drums were the most controversial part of this song. PS - I'm glad you liked it.

This is F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. Absolutely brilliant. Your best, yet, Mario. Out of your comfort zone? If this is that, then the rest of us have got no chance left, once you ARE in your comfort zone. Blooming wow. Love it ... it has, to my ear, some Oriental-sounding harmonies, and some similar turns of phrases which you have used and varied ever so well within this song. Most of all: real good music transcends analysis. This is one of those songs. Bravo, bravo, Mario. Fabulous.
