I Am Here
Whenever I try to make something sound contemporary, it doesn't work because the musical part of my brain is still stuck in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I have named the genre of this song Modern Archaic.

Style: POPBLAD
The Band:
Me: vocal and all BGVs
BB RealBass 2325 Bass, Synth, Rhythm JazzFunkFat
RealDrums-SynthDrumsDanceRock^1
BB RealPiano 1690 Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm PopPromise
BB RealGuitar 50 J_BLUES
NI Electric Storm
NI Sunburst Deluxe

The earth shatters
and drags you down
Nowhere an escape
is to be found
Memories fade and jumble
Crossroads crack and crumble

I am here
if you’re asking
I am here
I am now
Walk away or turn around
But you must know
I am here

Your shame burns through
and scars your mind
All the good things
get left behind
Memories fade and jumble
Crossroads crack and crumble

I am here
if you’re asking
I am here
I am now
Walk away or turn around
But you must know
I am here

I might not be the rainbow
At the end of the storm
But I could be the sunlight
That keeps you warm

Enjoyed the listen. The vocal timbre seems to get slightly more "strong" as the song progresses (which is a good thing.)

Scott,

This is excellent. Love the lyrics, vocal and instrumentation. Great mix!

For me, this is a very cool late 70s / early 80s sound.

I'm a fan!

This was great, Scott, almost anthemic. When the drums started, I wasn't sure what to expect, but it soon fell comfortably into your usual musical oeuvre. One of your best, I think. Really enjoyed it.

Hi, Scott.

The percussion is a nice spice to the mix. Love the BGVs - very cool.

The bridge works especially well. I'm not sure I'd be able to categorize the song, because it's a mix of a lot of styles. But it works well.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Scott - I loved, loved, loved the key changes from verse (Dm?) to chorus (G) and bridge (F?), with what sounded like a healthy dose of bVII chords in there and that marvellous A chord to transition to the chorus in G major then the F chord to final G chorus. These chord and key changes really suit the majestic nature of the song IMHO. Also, with the busy beats, the drawn-out syllables in the chorus are a good contrast.
I've had three listens already and will have to come back for another fresh listen. Great song.

Hello Scott,

A lovely song in all aspects!
I like how you sing the chorusses. You need a deep breath doing that...
The music (instruments) are working fine together.
Like Dave, I enjoyed that bass! Very nice.
And of course the lyrics... they are so well written, I am here!

Very cool tune, Scott! Nicely written and arranged. GREAT vocals, harmonies and BGVs. Especially love it when you bust the "turn around" lyric. Nifty sonic thump with those E. Drums and bass. Well conceived bridge. Just a super song, delivered right on the money.

I'm with you on trying to get a more "modern" sound. No matter what the RealStyle is called, I still sound like un-modern me. Nuthin' wrong with that, though! smile

Andrew, thank you for taking your time to dissect the music. I've been trying to educate myself on some music theory (although a bit late in the game), so I can understate the choices I make. So this was my intention although I might be wrong with my naming of the keys. The verse is G Dorian, the chorus G Ionian, and I switched to Bb Ionian for the bridge.

Modern Archaic? I'm in!! A fine production and a good write, Scott. Man, there is so much goodness in there --especially in the vocal. I love the subtle little pieces of instrurments that come out at just the right time. Very engaging mix. Oh, almost forgot to mention those outstanding lyrics.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Scott,
Very creative piece of music. 3 spins, still sounds fresh smile Super vocals. Bass is awesome. Drums sit nicely. They are modern, but not "in your face", which I like as it allows to focus on actual song and not get carried away by rhythm. "Modern Archaic" LOL, I know the feeling! Enjoyed my listen and thank you for sharing.

Misha.

P.S. I hope NI Electric Storm at least as good as Sunburst. It's on my list, but wait for a deep sale.

Thanks, Hans. Yes, I had to concentrate a bit more on breath control for the chorus.

Thanks, Misha. Electric Storm is a whole different beast, as far as sound goes, than Sunburst. It's got a lot of hard/heavy riffs that I don't know if I will be using, but you never know.

Yes, modern archaic sounds great!
We enjoy mashups and this does sound like 80’s music of Steve Winwood’s - cool.

Your vocals are strong and the bgv’s add a lot to the vibe.
We enjoyed the lyric, especially that last verse.

Great band, nice arrangement and the mix sets up an excellent soundstage on the Kalis.

Well done all around!

Ezekiel,

Well, if you wanted it to sound contemporary, you need to use a lot more loops and a heavy dose of autotune . . . I kid . . . well, kinda!

The song is excellent. Really catchy chorus, outstanding vocal (and nice use of BGVs). All the production elements work perfectly to my ears. Very cool tune!!

I enjoyed the lead and backing vocals, and the melodic jump when you sang "or turn around."

Scott,

Good music doesn't need to be further defined, in my opinion. If it's a great sound, what difference doies it make how you define it after that. Goos speaks fore itsself.

And this is indeed good music. I really enjoyed the strong percussion - it drives the song all the way. All those little background treats along the way were terrific!

I enjoyed this very much!

Alan

Something I didn't expect, but still refreshing change of style. Reminds me of British synth pop bands of 80's with strong vocalists. I surely would have liked this song already 40 years ago smile

Lyrically and melodically interesting, the bridge is especially nice, there's something divine and eternal in "I am here". And the chord progression sounds original, still in your trademark style.

Very good use of BIAB instruments that support your powerful voice and those nice harmonies. I like how you handle those low notes and how the higher notes sound so intensive.

Your mix of 60s, 70s, and 80s and some BIAB makes for good original music
That seems label enough

Very much enjoyed

I like it

Scott,

The combination of synth bass and synth drums is fantastic.
It's true that it's not used much these days, but it really gives this song a special originality.
And your powerful vocals on this song are great too.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

I’m esp drawn to melodies that are economical—fewer notes, simple but effective. That shows me a certain mastery and confidence. In this case, the first two notes in your lyric lines immediately hooked me. And the “I am here” phrase is really good. To top it off, the vocal delivery is wonderful. Only change I’d make—I didn’t like the electronic drums, I’d go with something more acoustic…but I think that’s what you were after—blending the 60s sound with a more modern touch. Anyway, excellent—thoroughly enjoyed it!!
