Trying to convert some old music performance vhs tapes to dvd. Bought a cheapy video capture cable –red white yellow connectors plugged through USB port on a Dell Dim 4200. On board sound card but I use an older Turtle Beach Santa Cruz instead which is great for my music.

Problem: Video Capture Cable installed fine and input video from VCR is visible on desktop - audio is also going in via USB Port – but in spite of the fact that there are USB audio drivers installed, I’m not getting any audio via the USB port to monitor the VCR playback from the desktop.
OS is WinXP SP3.
A right click to the speaker icon lower right, calls up my Santa Cruz Mixer but there is no USB entry along with Aux Line Mic Stereo Mix etc. But shouldn’t the audio by heard just the same as the Santa Cruz is entered under Sounds and Audio Devices as "default"? I have the onboard sound card “disabled”.

Anyone an idea what’s going on here?

Ian

"Bought a cheapy video capture cable "

May be the issue.
Record a chunk and see if sound is there 'after' recording.
It may be a situation where monitoring audio is not possible during the process.
I can't recall if my desktop device allows sound during the process.
There is a lot going on as audio and video get interleaved during the process.

Ian,
What software are you using to capture audio and video with?

1. Might be a setting in the software.
2. You may need to go to Sounds in Control Panel and change your Recording Input default device to the USB.

This is exactly what Win 7 is supposed to address if you have a newer motherboard that supports that. An XP machine can do it but you may need a separate video capture card or box not just a simple cable. I knew people a few years ago who bought those hardware boxes that you could plug in a VCR and output to a DVD burner. The cost at the time was $75 or something. You could probably find one of those for cheap in Craigslist or Ebay.

I have one of those harware capture boxes, and I *think* I don't hear the audio until after it is recorded .. could be wrong since it has been a while since I used it.

In Win7 you may have to set it to hear the USB input besides setting it to record the USB audio also. I don't think you will hear it through the turtle card until playback anyway.

Record a test chunk and see if sound is there at playback, may not be worth all the tinkering if the end result is the same.

Gary, Bob - just now discovered a switch in the Ulead Video Studio Software supplied with the capture device under menu item Video and Audio Capture Properties - it had been set for my default SantaCruz sound card. So I highlighted the USB Audio Interface which was next to it. And clicked on Preview audio with USB (Duh).

Nothing like asking for help - thanks to both for taking the time to respond - and then I discover it by accident. Sheesh.

I still have to find out if it records audio with the video - I'm sure it will, but enough for today.

Do you know of an other competent FREE video capture software which is more user friendly???

Cheers - Ian

XP, if you highlight the cable, under My Computer, will show you small VCR playback window with no sound - maybe if under control panel I remove the "use defaults" click, it might automatically use the USB Audio under playback for the VCR window - we'll see.

Not free, but I like ULead Movie Factory.
The ULead GUI is a little 'unusual' as you found out. Wonder if I have been missing the same checkbox all this time. Doesn't really matter as I don't sit and watch the movie I'm recording anyway and the sound does indeed get recorded in the end.

Nero video program is another with a weird GUI. Hard to find a lot of the features.
Seems the unusal interface problem comes with the territory.

I'm glad I got reading this thread. I may have that same setting inside ULead. How'd you find it?

Also this thread has given me an idea. I have been transferring parents and grandparents 8mm to DVD using a camera. Frame speed on camera can cause the usual fading (oscillating) that can be overcome with some light trickery. But if I run the camera video signal (analog) to that hadware unit I have a better frame rate option. Plus I could record right to laptop instead of recording to camera chip, then transerring.

See how much I learn here!
Luv it.

Strange, Bob - people creating software for video work, without an eye for design.

On the audio side, I thought I'd have a go at Reaper - except for learning one or two FX plugins, I can do without its learning curve I think - definitely a visual nightmare, I think.
Call it user-FIEND-ly for now.
