Gary, When the audio is not playing in BIAB, it's usually a driver-related issue. Try setting your audio driver to MME and see if that helps. When you are recording, which track are you recording to? Regarding the soloist. The soloist dialogue does allow you to choose what bars you want to have the solo across. That option is available via the "Custom" button (see the image below). [Linked Image] Alternatively, if you select the bars in which you want a solo by dragging the mouse across them, you can then right-click and select "Multiriff" from the menu that pops up (or press F8). Multiriff allows partial regeneration across a selected range of bars. [Linked Image] It is also possible to access partial regeneration in Audio Edit by selecting (within Audio Edit) the range of bars or parts of bars where you would like to place the solo. I hope this information helps. --Noel P.S. I see Matt answered while I was putting my post together. It seems that he and I both agree about MME smile

Thanks Marty. I'm glad that I kept my ESQ1. I don't use it that often these days, but it does have some really nice tones that I haven't been able to find on more modern synths. The forest flute is one that I'll definitely use again on future songs.

David and Noel, thanks for the thorough and patient answers. Might this all make a good Tips and Tricks article: how to choose and use synth voices in BIAB? Then when these questions keep surfacing, you can point to the article. (There may already be something there; I didn't look yet).

Re: How Much Power Will AI computing Actually Require? (article) rharv Yesterday at 09:48 PM Forum: Off-Topic Jump to new postsJump to new posts
Some here seem to welcome our new overlords .. <grin> Simon kind of made my earlier point clearer, though unintentionally - " It's probably less likely to do with AI and more because investors want a reliable return on their dollars, making the studios go for more generic copypasta than actually creating something interesting and worthwhile." For AI to 'know' something it learns from existing stuff (and some people are upset their 'stuff' is being used), which is likely why the human originality aspect is getting lost in some aspects. I think the arts will (in the long run) overcome AI due to human originality.

The melody in the lead parts is really strong, really worth pursuing as a separate entity. The lead & sitarish thing get caught up with each other during the intro...neither winning or setting the vibe. Are you still amping in the digital realm? Either way the tone suits the playing very well.

We love the arrangement with the intensity building and then reducing. And the tempo slowing in the last verse is very effective. This is a well crafted melancholic personal narrative indeed. Your son’s vocal is great and reminds us of Rod Stewart The entire band and mix sound good on our monitors. And we enjoyed it! J&B

Rick Beato - amen! I actually shed a tear, because he just nailed it, and exposed the flip side of any art in our society today. I'm guilty of being an active Apple Music Subscriber, I used to subscribe to Netflix/Amazon/Disney/HBO, I subscribe to Storytell and on my TV I subscribe to put art on my Samsung The Frame TV. I can have everything at my fingertips, easy and convenient - but I value it less, than what I used to do. I have so many choices on how to spent my spare time with art. You can add social media, gaming etc to that equation.' The interesting thing is, what I actually value is music I listened to in the past - with very few exceptions. I value watching and learning about historical things - especially understanding the 60's, 70 and the 80's better with the historians perspectives. I value real acting, comedy performed live and listening to books (in the car while I drive) and last but not least - listening to radio...not music radio - old fashion radio where real people share experiences, exchange views and perspectives. Especially with streaming and social media, it is very difficult to balance these things in a meaningful way - since algorithms and AI just feed me the same things over and over again. As an extensive user of BIAB for more than a decade, using other composer aid tools as well - I also somehow add to the Rick Beato's drain is his kitchen sink. But without some of these wonderful tools, I wouldn't be spending hours trying to improve my singing, song writing, guitar playing ....the list goes on. I think the main difference is, that I want to control the full process, and try to replace even Real Tracks to see if I can do it more like my own work. With the AI tools on trial, I feel that I'm no longer in the driving seat of the process. I guess that's a matter of taste and experience with the various tools I would have loved to be part of a band, but the chance and option never came my way. I never started making music to become rich and famous (I dreamt of that in a younger age), but especially BIAB became my band. For others their AI became their band. The funny thing is - that since I have 50+ songs out there, the AIs might even feed on my music (probably to learn what not to do grin ... ) So maybe the safest bet is for the AIs to learn from the masters and generate artistic questionable or even poor music, that the Air will learn from again - maybe a downward spiral, might change music business again, and make room for the talented, the creative, the geniuses ....maybe we have to go fully through this era, for music to develop. Meanwhile I will spend a lot of my time and attention to keep on watching guys like Rick, to remind me of what used to be, what used to make me both happy and sad at the same time, but what used to make me feel alive. If you read so far - thank you - I'll end my ramble

Like it very much. Your vocals are great, especially your harmonies. Nice melody and changes, very interesting. Nice "Live" sound to the backing tracks. I do have one suggestion with the mix; I think the left panned strumming guitar is bit too loud and it overpowers your vocals, and the rest of the mix. If you pull it back, maybe add a bit of reverb to it will sit better in the mix. Try cutting the EQ @ 120hz all instrument tracks except the kick drum and bass, this will give a cleaner space for your vocals to live in. I like this song very much, lyrics, vocals, and music all work great.

I must say I was a little intrigued to know more about the statistics. The National Weather Services States: "According to the NWS Storm Data, over the last 30 years (1989-2018) the U.S. has averaged 43 reported lightning fatalities per year. Only about 10% of people who are struck by lightning are killed, leaving 90% with various degrees of disability. More recently, in the last 10 years (2009-2018), the U.S. has averaged 27 lightning fatalities." At an average of 270 'lightning strikes' per year in the States, there are possibly more Hard Drive failures / year than lightning strikes.
I agree, You’re more likely to have a drive fail than get lit up. Both probabilities are pretty close to zero. At least they should be if your backup statedgerie is sane. And you stay off the water in a thunderstorm. That’s my point.

Use of MIDI pedals - LONG OVERDUE! ZeroZero Yesterday at 05:02 PM Forum: Band-in-a-Box Wishlist Jump to new postsJump to new posts
I am a long time user. I have a very capable studio. I use BIAB every day for piano. Here are two suggestions that would greatly improve BIAB Please bear in mind that if you use BIAB and are a musician, you might have a harp between your legs, or a dodgy music stand with an iPad with which to enter. You might be in a pub with a pint in one hand and a lead guitar - in the dark...... . It's always been hard to keep a looped part of a track stable, if the app receives some rogue input from a long list of things, the loop fails and the music cursor travels onwards out of the loop. What we need first is stable looping, so first... What I would suggest stable visible looping. Using virtual "push pins" (seen on cork boards), be able to set the beginning and end of a chosen section. The area would then highlight itself and STAY like this, until one push pin was deselected. The second thing is the use of stops and loops - USING A MIDI PEDAL. I mean here the use of a sus pedal like MIDI pedal like can be plugged into various systems and receive and transmit MIDI data. An on/off kind of instruction. Here are some examples of the vast difference this could make: 1] You're going around the cycle of fourths, you have four bars for each key. You're vibing on while, you feel your done with this, you press the MIDI pedal and BIAB goes on to the next four bars - etc. 2] At a certain point in a song, you want a stop, not one with a prescribed period, but a part where you can show off your astonishing air guitar impersonation of Eddie Van Halen. This might go on a while.....unfortunately cool . Then you want the virtual band to pick up with the beat again. All that is required for this to happen is a MIDI pedal! In brief flexible tacets. NO hands required! 3] On performance of Girl from Ipanema you want to start with a free impro on Jobim's chords. Your going to try to disguise the well known melody and then pull it in in bits - your not sure how this will go until you do it, it might be eight bars, or if you have ideas then 12 or 16..... once again a MIDI pedal could do this. 4] In similar ways MIDI pedals can control the timings of outros, various repeats, introducing in segments. Broadly, using a pedal offers the musician escape from the creative constraints of fixed patterns, in my opinion if this feature ALONE could mean that the 2025 BIAB is worth the price of admission! Perhaps some would not agree initially, but if you think about this, such a feature can (with the right interface) be used to control any MIDI signal so there are many ways to explore this idea. It can transform BIAB. Expression pedal data could be used too, to control velocity and more. It will bring the interface up a level and offer better ways to use BIAB. If the interface is well constructed this can be a highly intuitive list of options, the user can be shields from MIDI programming. Z

Re: Your Brain On Art Bass Thumper Yesterday at 04:37 PM Forum: Off-Topic Jump to new postsJump to new posts
I acquired another "datapoint" on this fascinating and important subject. I recently attended a college-level lecture on "Neuro-protection" and strategies for maintaining brain health as we age. The professor specializes in Parkinson's Disease, is associated with the Michael J. Fox Foundation and works with animal models; mainly rats. [He says rats are much more cooperative than mice, expecially when you put them on the treadmill. Plus they bite less frequently.] He is also knowledgable in Alzheimer's. We all should know this by now, but in his slides he talked a lot about daily physical and mental exercise; the idea is that we need to "struggle" if benefits are to be expected. Music did come up, and his point was learning a new instrument is better than playing the one you already know how to play; again, it's all about building new neural pathways to replace the ones that are going to die off, and that takes "struggle". New terms entered my vocabulary as a result of his talk: Neurotrophic and BDNF. Bottom line: There are things we can do.

Just to add to my post asking BIAB to institute AI vocals so a BIAB version would do it. SUNO has basically done it! they've added a new feature that will do "cover songs" so if you add a BIAB song, with a rough vocal (like i used to do for my demos) tell it what style you want.... it will do a cover of your song with your tune. It is spectacular... however you have to get the paid version (it's relatively inexpensive $10 a month or $96 dollars if you pay for a year). This is minor, but I'm listed on site as a newbie, but I've had every edition of BIAB since it first came out in the early 90's and wrote an Emmy nominated song using tracks from BIAB

Viel Erfolg!

Simon. just some thoughts in reply. 1..imho these are gonna be very exciting times for users of pc's and macs. its been boring for too looong imho....lol. (only sooo much can be crammed on a wafer....) and moores law has been screwed up by the tech plateuing. 2..i'm glad the mac silicon has come out because (like duellists of yore...) its going to force intel and amd to 'up the ante' in order to maintain market share. which is good for consumers. ie more power and hopefully lower prices which i hope will help poorer musicians. some higher end processors the pricing is too high imho. THUS..i would dare anyone to assume intel or amd are just gonna roll over and cede the market to the m series. we shall see. my call is intel and amd will fight like heck for the revenue. what i'm suggesting is that the m technology might be slaying the market right now...but...as weve'e seen over the years... when it comes to tech, what is 'hot' today isnt later in time. there is a limit to arm tech like any technology. and like any tech there are limits and positives and negatives. (lots of research articles on arm vs x86 on the net.) 3..what really interests/excites me is how apple r n' d evolves the m series silicon going forward..and how far they can take it. will they astound us all ? or...will the m series tech plateau. ?? will something else from intel or amd beat the m series ? 4..lets remember us musos are just one sub market. lots of people out there just wanna surf the net/email/office tasks etc etc. and thus this new fanless hold in ones hand pc that i just got for 140 bucks off amazon is perfectly capable of these tasks....sure..it would not do 200 tracks and a host of plugins but for s's and giggles rb reported 74 track capability. which i would prolly halve (to have a buffer ) to 30 tracks. in summary it would be fine for knocking out a rough song demo with a few tracks. in fact the little beast has surprised me....it boots into win in just a few secs and even latency mon gave it the green light dpc wise. but heavy duty stuff...of course not. (but i'm not useing it for song production of course and keep my song production pc sandboxed.) but my little 140 buck beast i would suggest with more powerfull next gen processor...at that price point could with the proper cpu boosts handle your 200 tracks for a peanut price in a few years... we shall see. (LOL...lets not forget the little pi that just got a new processor..). dont get me wrong..lots of respect to apple for the m series...but lets not forget there IS competition from under 200 buck refurbs AND new mini pc's. talking about refurbs.. 5..re..that hp z series for the daft low price of 180 bucks. ive done very fancy songs on way way less for myself/friends/clients.. in days of yore. i agree...its not up to the m series class...but...for years many studios have used those workstation class pc's (and dell/lenovo equivalents) for music production. the thing i really like about those xeon workstations is the expandability. in summary imho yep not up to the m series but still a beast. nobody can complain for such a crazy low price imho. (it was over 2k when new i believe.) as i said...exciting times. fyi i have just tested many different daws and kept coming back to rb. so...i would love to hear if rb could run in win emulation on m series silicon without probs. ps...btw..microsofts Pete Brown (who owns a pretty impressive studio) has a midi thread on gearspace.. talking of which...yes...over the years the ms os has garnered various critiques...but...its obvious from the link below ms is makeinga lot of effort for us song creators useing its os. i gotta be fair...my production pc works day in/out with nary a squeak. the key with pc imho is to choose the right pc for music production instead of useing any old pc with bad dpc etc stats. https://gearspace.com/board/music-computers/1424835-windows-midi-services-info.html interesting info about midi stack etc etc. happiness. om
