When We Dance Again

I have been a square dancer for 20 years and a square dance caller for 10 years. When the pandemic hit it shut down square dancing all over the world. I wrote this song and made the video to give a little comfort to the square dancers around the world. Most dancers are 65 years or older and square dancing is one of the few physical activities they participate in to get exercise and meet with friends and family. Although this song is about my activity, I think we all have some activity we are anxious to get back to when this is finally over.

Some of you may notice that all of my music is in MONO. I lost hearing in one ear 20 years ago so the stereo option went away for me. Since I use some of my music in my square dance calling it works pretty well because the songs are played through a PA system and stereo doesn’t matter.

I built the song in BIAB and finished the tracks in Studio One. Other than the vocals, BIAB RealTracks provided all of the music. I usually keep generating a track until one of the instruments I am using provides a workable intro, break, or ending. I’ll save the individual wave files as Intro 1, Intro 2, etc. Then I bring them up in Studio One and sort out the best parts. I am hoping with the new utility tracks I can do more regenerating portions of a track and not have to make so many individual waves to find a part I like. If I can’t find a good intro or break I will just play the part myself on guitar or keyboard.

The style I used for this song was _MELWALZ.STY. I used the following RealTracks:
Bass=1122 Piano=2049 Drums=NashClassicWaltzSW Guitar 1=829 Guitar 2=827 Guitar 3=826 Pedal Steel=1127

Thanks for listening!

Nice song and video!

I really enjoyed watching and listening. smile

It sounds like you use the same technique for building songs that I do.

You might want to look at the MultiRiffs feature that has been added to BiaB.

But... honestly, the implementation is baffling, because it overwrites the first 7 tracks in your song with the Multiriffs.

Why it doesn't instead copy them to previously empty Utility tracks, or just render them externally is something I can't explain.

Anyway, another option to look at.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Barry ...

Another really nice song from you. WE DON'T HEAR A LOT OF 3/4 these days. So nicely done. An uplifting lyric with just the right background music. I liked it a lot. Best to you ...

Alan

Love the way 3/4 makes the body move. Well done, Barry, and a very cool video to go with it.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hey Barry,

Thanks for posting your approach to creating a song. I never would have thought of starting that way, but I might in the future.

I like what you are doing here with your combined BIAB plus video approach. As stated in your last song, I think video involved in an otherwise audio presentation makes it more interesting.

Square dancing has never been on my radar at all, but you make it look interesting! I think we all look forward to the day when you can be back on the floor dancing.

Thanks Alan. In our square dance world we do Round Dancing which is like ballroom dancing in a circle with someone giving the "cues" for each step. My wife is one of these "cuers" so I like to write 3/4 songs for her to cue at the dances. We love waltzing and I have always loved songs with waltz tempo.

Thanks David. I tried the MultiRiffs when it was introduced but I also found it very confusing. I was in the middle of a project at the time and never spent much time with it. I'll have to go back and try it again.

Thanks Pat. We have really enjoyed square dancing. It is great exercise. Unfortunately it takes several weeks of lessons to learn it so it is hard to get young people interested in it. If they would just give it a try they would make it their own "thing" and love it.
Since we can't dance yet I've been able to keep busy writing, recording, and making videos. Every song I write in the near future will probably be influenced by how I can turn it into an interesting video. It's a lot of fun.

This one almost got past me but I'm sure glad I got to listen to it. Barry this is fantastic. Love the positive theme set to a waltz style. Your mix is excellent also.

I'm not a square dancer but my late uncle used to cut up a rug every time there was a square dance in our area. I have some of his square dance albums here.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.

Lovely track! It is really nice to hear music made in 3/4. Doesn't happen too often in this forum. I like it.

Kind regards,
Will

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
