Just Foolin' Around with BIAB style BluesStr.Sty

I made some minor tweaks to the midi in Logic and added my own instruments. The BIAB backing is midi bass, piano (left hand), and acoustic guitar with the BIAB real drums that come with the style.

Over that I played organ, electric guitar and the right hand piano in the piano solo.

Incidentally, the organ part is played with guitar midi... an experiment.

Certainly this has worked out well. It would be difficult to pick that without knowing.

Smooth 12-bar blues. Good feel.

I have edited the organ part to make it sound more 'authentic'. Sliding down the fretboard put every note in but a glissando on the keyboard only puts in all the white notes. I took the black notes out of the glissandos and I think it sounds more real.

(The guitar midi I used for this is Jam Origin's MidiGuitar 2 which is a fraction of the cost of the hardware options and works ten times better. I would recommend looking into it for any guitar players who want to get into midi without having to learn a keyboard... and no, I have no affiliation with JamOrigin. I am just impressed with how well it works.)

Hi Chris,

Organ sounds great.

Bass - just about blew my speakers out of their cabinets. Maybe ease back on the bass especially at some very troublesome frequencies.

You will have a killer track.

Best Regards
Nigel

This is an awesome track. It sounds like a late night smokey jazz club...

Hi Chris,

Yeah, I love this, great feel!

Very impressed with that organ track, guitar midi is something I know nothing about. What VSTi did you use if you don't mind my asking?

Love the jazzy guitar work too, very well done.

Great listen!

The organ is IK Multimedia's Hammond B-3X. They had it on sale recently and I couldn't resist...

Previously I have been using the Vintage B3 that comes with Logic, which is also pretty good, but I think the IKM model is a bit better...

Thanks Nigel I have cleaned up the bass sound and reduced the volume a little (although I do want the bass to definitely be present in the mix...). Maybe this will prevent blowing up your speakers! ha ha. You must have more bass presence than I have in my monitors...

Hi Chris,

That's great - I have listened on my monitors (FOCAL Alpha 65's) and my AKG K240 studio headphones (very flat) and - bass is perfect!

I must have missed the reverb on the Guitar solo first time round - superb!

Thanks & Best Regards
Nigel

Nicely played and arranged. I've used Midi Guitar with mixed results. What audio interface are you using?

Excellent guitar work both as a guitar and organ.

Oh, so good and so much fun to listen to, Chris. Thanks for the explanation. That guitar/organ is outstanding. Taking our the black keys for the gliss was brilliant, and sounds time-consuming. (on my 2nd listen now) haha. I started typing "Great taste of your right hand", but thought I should rephrase that. Seriously though, great chops!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Mr. Dent...

What a warm, soulful, slow-swinging track this is! Your conversational, expressive keyboard performance(s) made it even more pleasurable to sit back and listen to. The guitar-MIDI-to-organ track brimmed over with the quietly bluesy mellowness of a kind of midnight jazz that was very nostalgic and relaxing to me.

Hi Peter, Jam Origin Midi Guitar 2 is a software plugin that converts any guitar input into midi. No hardware required. I previously tried using Fishman Tripleplay pickup and it was a complete waste of money as far as I am concerned. The fishman is OK if you are the kind of player who picks every note but MG2 picks up all the hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, glissandos etc. Much more suited to my style of playing. It takes a bit of fiddling to get the setup right and if you try it I would advise using a string mute to avoid incidentals appearing...

Surprisingly quick actually. In the Logic piano roll I just scrolled to where the glissandos were and clicked on the black notes and hit delete. All over in a couple of minutes. A quick easy fix to get a 'natural' gliss...

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

Brilliant performances by you and a great display of the power of BiaB in talented hands.

That midi bass sounds excellent as do all the tracks.

Nice and slinky smooooooth....

Love it,

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
