I posted this to tech support, but assume others might have had this issue Running BIAB 23 for Windows. Using ASIO4all ASIO driver. When I open BIAB, everything works well. If I am working on a song and want to sample another style, when I go back to the song there is no sound output. I will sometimes get an error 117.
WHen I open the ASIO driver information, it shows a red X next to audio out, which I assume means that it's not closing properly to allow BIAB to work again
The only fix I have so far is to close BIAB entirely and then re-open. All works well then until the next time. Hoping someone has experience with this and can assist Thanks in advance
ASIO4ALL is garbage and it is not even a real ADIO driver but a wrapper for the WDM driver.
What audio interface are you using?
Byron Dickens
BIAB. CbB. Mixbus 32C 8 HP Envy. Intel core i7. 16GB RAM W10. Focusrite Scarlett 18i 20. Various instruments played with varying degrees of proficiency.
The answer is to not use an ASIO driver until you need to. Use Band-in-a-Box's MME or WAS audio setting instead of ASIO.
Generally, an ASIO driver is created by an equipment manufacturer to minimize recording latency. Record latency is the amount of time the audio interface, your computer and the recording program requires to record your performance. As Byron pointed out ASIO4All is not an ASIO driver and it has its own set of issues.
Most ASIO drivers suffer from the same issue. They allow only one program at a time to access the driver. Some programs aggravate the issue because they do not release the driver even when they are no longer using the driver.
Microsoft is aware of the issues surrounding ASIO drivers and introduced WASPI or WAS as an alternative that does not depend on an equipment manufacturer. The Windows Audio Session API (WASAPI or WAS) enables programs to manage the flow of audio data between the program and an audio endpoint.
So, when you are recording, if you are using an audio interface to record and the audio interface manufacturer provides an ASIO driver, use the equipment specific driver while recording.
Thanks for this. I did try using the MME driver, but was disappointed by the latency of my keyboard during recording. Is there any way to combat that?

I am sure no one here would disagree with the fact that you need an ASIO driver when you are recording. Absolutely. But, when you are not recording you will find MME more flexable and compatible with all other music making applications assoicated with BIAB.
Regarding the problem you stated above, I don't really understand your exact workflow
"...When I open BIAB, everything works well. If I am working on a song and want to sample another style, when I go back to the song there is no sound output. I will sometimes get an error 117".
Do you have two open applications of BIAB? How do you "sample another style" and then "go back to the song"? Nevertheless, ASIO will only permit one open application at a time.
Bottom line, the problem is drivers and the configuration of those drivers is related to how your keyboard is connected to your PC. As mentioned in all responses, best bet is to get a good interface which comes with good drivers. Then if you still have an issue, show us your configurations.
Here is my driver configurations in BIAB. I use MME (WAS was a bust for me) for all playback. Then I use my motu ASIO for recording my keyboard.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
