BIAB Realdrums now contain a few cajon-based rhythms. I recently used one in a song. Up until this song, though, I had no idea what a cajon was. In case you're like me and you've have never heard of them, this video might give a bit of insight. Cajons seem to work very well within acoustic arrangements.

They're a brilliant instrument and, with care (see below), you can pack other things inside them to carry around. Shakers maybe.
Not obvious from those clips, but they quite often also have snare springs inside.

Janice has played her cajon on several of our user showcase songs. Since she taps out drum style rhythms so often when listening to music I thought she would have fun with one. And she does smile It's an interesting instrument to mic indeed. I was amazed at the different sounds it can create.

Cajons are great.

Get the version with snares, and it's basically the same as a kick and snare of a drumkit.

Zero setup time, easy to learn and play, and as Gordon said, you can stash shakers and brushes inside. Not too loud when played in a small room, they can fill a large church without a mike, throw a mike on it and EQ a bit and you can get an impressively big sound. Bring it outdoors for a quick jam session.

When I bought mine, I brought it home and had my son try it out for a couple minutes. Then off to church, and he was playing like a champ. I should note he'd been playing on the back of pews for years before that. wink

I have a cymbal and a small hi-hat for it, but most of the time just play the cajon, as it's all that's really needed. I've even got a kick pedal, which is a pain to set up so it never gets used - although I'm tempted to use it when I have to choose between cajon or bass laugh.

I've tried out electric drums, full-size kits, and even kid size kits. They've all gone the wayside, because the cajon is so much more convenient.

Plus, it's functional as a chair - just don't use it as a stepstool!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Same here: a friend noticed that I always play imaginary kick, snare, and cymbals when I listen to music, so he gave me a Cajon (I didn't know there was such a thing at the time) and I LOVED it!

Tip: Go to a store that has several different Cajons in stock and play EACH of them, because they all sound and feel different.
The right one will speak to you!

It's just occurred to me that we're writing the word and many of us will know the pronunciation, but not everyone necessarily does.
It's something like kahOn.

It depends a little bit what country you're from for the pronunciation. I'm not great at phonetic spellings of words but the standard American English version is similar to "Kah-hone. "Kah" like kaboom. "hone" like home.

The Spanish version has a much more pronounced "H" sound.

I can't even begin to tell you all of the different versions of this word I've heard. I'm not someone to correct people on their pronunciation of it because from what I've seen, they typically respond with "I've always said..." with their pronunciation of it. I doubt they change; so not much of a point unless they ask. Google can also be your friend with something like this.

It's like it's own little niche word. laugh

Anyway, it's a pretty great percussion option in my opinion. I like the sound and I like this it's portable!

I'm really late to the cajon party, it seems. It's certainly got a lot going for it smile

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
