Six Rooms And A PathI posted this one about 7 or 8 years ago. I polished it up a bit in Audacity. I think the vocal is still a little louder than ideal. But the instrumental tracks sound quite a bit better. It's an acoustic country swing tune with fiddle on the lead. I had to really work on that acoustic bass to get a full sound without too much mush. I think it came out pretty good. I mixed the drums (mostly a sidestick) such that they are barely audible. When I brought them up - even a small amount - they sounded too modern/fancy. So I left them as they were. Until I was 9 or 10 years old, we lived on a farm out in the boonies, not too far from Troy, Missouri. We never had indoor plumbing. But in 1954, the REA (Rural Electric Association) hooked us up with electricity. But six months later, we moved into town. Go figure! The lyrical story is pretty close to how I grew up. The verses are all AAAA pattern and the choruses are AABB. Since the music doesn't change significantly in the choruses - although the chord pattern does - I thought changing the rhyming pattern would help to differentiate the choruses. As an aside: That big wood-burning stove in the kitchen left a pretty big scar on my belly when I walked into it in the middle of the night. I was either 5 or 6 years old. That was a pretty big ouch! This sounds great. Love the song and the backstory. We also had one of those wood-burning stoves in our living room many years ago. You really have to be on your toes around those things!
The polish and mix sounds fresh and I think your vocal is sitting right where it needs to be.

Alan, since you didn’t have Lucky Oceans or Cindy Cashdollar on steel, I thought it leaned a little more towards Bob Wills. With some of the humor I expected to hear “Ah Ha”. You sang it great! The vocal is sitting just right. You really painted a picture of your past with the descriptive lyrics. Great work and I really enjoyed my listen, Tom

Alan, such a great throwback in musical form and finely crafted lyrics. Don't think I've heard a lyric with "fescue" before. Oh, and the punchline is great, too!
All the instruments fit together real nice. SUPERB vocals, and everything is mixed just right.
Those cast iron stoves didn't have safety cages, but were a popular gathering spot on a cold winter day. The good old days weren't always the best of times, but it's easy to look back on them and wish you could go back, even if just for a visit...

Your vocals are/were really good!
And I loved the lyrics very much ánd the way the song swirls its way along them (if that is a proper way of telling I like both the melody and the singing of those lyrics...).

Great work and I really enjoyed my listen, Tom Hi Tom, I met Cindy Cashdollar when I lived in San Antonio, TX for a number of years back in the '70s. She's a nice lady and can play the heck out of a lap steel or a stand-up with no pedals. And she can shred an electric guitar with the best of them! I've never seen nor heard her play a pedal steel. I've never met Lucky Oceans, but I've heard him on many of the Asleep At The Wheel albums or saw him on Austin City Limits several when he played with Ray Benson in the early '70s. You're probably right about the style being more Bob Wills. Thanks for the feedback on the mix and the very nice other comments. Best to you, Alan

Our house is adjacent to the local high school - literally. I talk to the students quite a bit. They ask me how old I am. I tell them Harry Truman was president when I was born. Their reply: Who's Harry Truman? Ha! They also ask me if I miss "the good old days" like so many old folks do, and if so, why. I told them that I did. And the primary reason was the innocence of the era - vulgarity in everyday speech was seldom heard, you could leave the keys in your and not worry about it being stolen, etc. Anyway, many thanks for those kind comments. Oh my word  What a song I will say it straightaway, with no exaggeration at all, and in all seriousness: one of the best songs I've heard on this forum, and that is indeed saying something, given the constant high quality on here. Loved the way you sung it, always with good humour in your voice, the story is beautiful, the writing spectacular, and that fiddle: hats off, too Loved it. There's always something human and warm and kind about your songs, different though they may be from one another, in style - they have that in common. Loved this one. Did I already say I loved it? BRAVO.

fj Hi Floyd, The story is at least 85% true of my early upbringing. And thank you so much for the very kind comments on everything. The lyric came pretty easily - just a couple of hours from the first word until last. The band is pretty much generic to the style - I did replace the fiddle, though. I probably spent 4 - 5 hours total on the song over a span of two days. Again, I appreciate everything you said. Alan

I particularly appreciate your comments about the warmth of my music. that extends beyond what the listener hears and reflects on the person. I deeply appreciate that. Other than abuse to another person or to an animal, I can usually find something to smile or laugh about. I think you already know I am an author and have books on Amazon. Among them is a humorous detective series (The Cash Register Series). I enjoy writing them so much. A good sense of humor and some degree of writing skills has served me well in both novel authorship and music creation. To suggest this is among the better songs having been posted here is a nice, warm feather in my cap. Al, this fantastic song to me back to the not so good "good ol' days"
We had 18 rooms and a path! It was amazing how fast you can go in an outside bathroom during the winter! We did have a pot belly coal stove and electricity, one outlet in every room!
Back to your song it was great.
Super vocal and relatable lyrics, at least to me.

When I was a child, we also didn't have air conditioning at home, so I remember sometimes getting burnt on the stove.

WHAT A GREAT TITLE, and then you write the perfect song to bring it to life. SIx rooms was a lot, and that path is so cold at night --especially in Missouri.
Love the cheer you keep in the experience. We had an egg lady who came around with a horse and wagon, the junk man with a rickety old pickup, and the mailcarrier was more like the pony express. Excellent lyrics!! Really enjoyable listen, Alan.

This song is AWESOME for several reasons: it's a true story, historical, well produced (loved the use of the fiddle breaks), and your voice and phrasing fit this genre perfectly. Could you enlighten me on what 'the path' was?

I had almost completed a reply to you and then it simply disappeared into cyberspace. That place must be full of stuff!
Anyway, I originally said: Eighteen rooms? That's a bunch of house!!! The wood burner I referred to in the song was the kitchen cook stove. It had six burners and an over/under double oven. It was HUGE!!! But we did have a pot-bellied iron heating stove in the monstrous main bedroom. Four double beds and two chests - with a bit of room to spare. My older brother and I slept in a very small unheated bedroom at the back of the house.
