I wanted to revert back to the 2023 build 1010 version for some quick testing.
Was running 2024 build 1104 before trying to go back to 2023 build 1010.
I figured all I needed to do was to do the following.
1. Rename bbw64.exe to bbw64-new.exe in the main BB directory 2. Copy bbw64_2023.0.0.1010 from the backup folder ((bb-data-backup-buids) to BB and rename it to bbw64.exe
What happens is that I get popup windows, one after another, saying "Too many tempo swaps" and that happens on any song I open. It finally goes to the splash screen after 8 clicks of the mouse and opens the program. The splash screen still shows version 2024 but with a build # of 1010 (from the last 2023 update)
Obviously just copying the single EXE file from the backup directory to the main directory is not doing a complete restore, not just what is found in the backup directory.
There has to be more 2023 files that need to be in the main BB directory in order to do a full revert to the old version.
Before upgrading I ALWAYS make a full backup of bb and realband folder so I can run the old version any time I want. I do this to check integrity of the upgrade (did I really get all the new stuff I paid for?) I also do this in case a new version ruins my old songs so I can recreate them as needed with the old version. I have no idea of any other way to reliably revert to an older version.
Love the Bitmap tip. Had fun changing my splash screen and wasted another hour out of my life.
But back to the topic at hand. When you do an upgrade, it asks if you want to do a backup. Obviously it is not doing a full backup and there appears to be no way to actually go back to a previous version.
bbw.exe, bbw64.exe, bbw4_64.exe, bbw4_32.exe, bbw2_64,exe and bbw2_32.exe are all upgraded from the 2023 version yet the 2024 upgrade ONLY backs up the old bbw.exe and bbw64.exe
That is the point I am trying to make. Why ask if you want a backup before the upgrade if it does not fully back up all the necessary files related to the previous version, so you can revert back.
Certainly not a big deal at all on my end at all as I keep old versions of the program on old drives I keep on the shelf.
Thanks Matt. Since it is not resolvable at the user end and the developers need to look into it, I am marking it Resolved for now and will wait for a possible patch down the line, if it ever does.
I did go back and check the logs after I got the 9 popup windows upon booting and this is what it showed.
Could be it just does not like what it sees in one or more of the other 2024 setup files that stayed in place after trying to revert back to 2023.
I can only assume it wants me to settle on the tempo I really want.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows® Today!
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
