I use BB mainly for arranging and composing jazz and bossa nova and think that the first and last chorus of a style incl. horns (and perhaps strings) should be similar.
Also it would be nice to control the vibrato speed of the vibraphone, which is an instrument sound I use a lot.

If you are using RealTracks then I think this would not be possible, as they are actual pre-recorded audio samples.
If using MIDI, then perhaps it is configurable in the MIDI device you are using? (I don't have specific knowledge though on this).

I do know what you mean. My 50-year old vibraphone (used on tour with Linda Ronstadt) has a drive belt and three different diameter drive wheels on the motor's shaft, so I can select the speed of the tremolo I want. It's actually not vibrato despite the name; it's tremolo (changes in volume). I think the player would have had to record the RealTrack with one or the other setting and BIAB cannot alter it. If you like a RealTrack but feel it should have been recorded by a different tremolo setting, you can make a request in the Styles Wishlist Forum. For MIDI, that's a question I can't answer but I've never encountered anything I could change, besides selecting a different patch for a vibraphone. My Roland MIDI synth offers several choices.

As for your first question, BIAB used to have two defaults. The first was that a new song would have three choruses (using the jazz meaning of 'chorus'. The second was that there is an option to 'vary the middle chorus(es)'. That meant that even if the first time through the song used an "A" part marker, BIAB would switch to the "B" part marker to get a 'busier' pattern for the middle choruses, ostensibly for a backing behind a live soloist.

Does that address your question? If so, either use repeats for the number of choruses and make sure that option for varying is on, or else make one long song where the first and last chorus use the A part marker. Hope that made sense.

You can add tremolo to an audio file. Google/Bing adding vibrato or tremolo to an audio file and you will find some programs/VSTs that can do just that. The free Audacity with all of the added effects can do it also. When using Audacity you would have to bring in your RT, add your effect(s), then bring it back into either BiaB (if possible - don't know never tried it) or into a DAW.

Adding vibrato or Tremolo to a MIDI file depends on your sound source. I have Vibes and other sounds, including the SWAM instruments, that can add the effect via a CC number, usually CC1, the mod wheel.

I hope this helps and good luck.

I may have to pick up the SWAM vibraphone. Thanks for the info, Mario.

Swam doesn't have a vibraphone. I have a couple of vibes programs that use CC1 however my music computer is down for complete backups. If I get a break I will get the names of them for you. I was referring to the Swam saxes and trumpet. You can add vibrato via CC1 or any other CC if your wish in them.

My wish is regardless of the number of chorus, the background would be similar to the first chorus, except for the ending. The middle choruses must (of course) vary.

Swam doesn't have a vibraphone.
If it's any interest, Pianoteq has a modelled Vibraphone with controllable tremolo and the like. https://www.modartt.com/vibes

I was going to PM Matt but thought others may be interested so FWIW:

I have two vibe programs that us the mod wheel to control tremolo:
Pure Jazz vibes for $99

https://www.orangetreesamples.com/products/pure-jazz-vibes

and My vibes for $14:

https://www.fluffyaudio.com/shop/my-vibes/

Pure Jazz Vibes is the better sounding of the two but My Vibes isn't to bad.

Thank you both, Mario and Gordon. I went right to the Audio Modelling site, thinking there was a new product I had missed. I do think it would be fun if they offered vibes and piano.

Mario,

both of your suggestions sound very good, but since I play the (7-string) guitar I have no mod wheel.

So how should I go about using either one of the suggested programmes with BB?

Tonnie

You would have to draw the mod wheel data in via automation.

OR you could purchase a small MIDI keyboard controller for $45 USD that contains a mod wheel:

https://www.amazon.com/midiplus-32-Key-Keyboard-Controller-AKM322/dp/B016O5F2GQ?asc_source=01HFY6QA7Q8N1TT2Z879WGSZ46&tag=snx79-20&th=1

Plus with a MIDI controller you can control other features via the knobs and wheels plus you can easily input notes via the keyboard. If you read music transferring your "guitar" notes to "keyboard" notes is very easy. Note that I am also a guitarist and had the growing pains that you are currently going through.

Mario,
Greg from Orange Tree Samples wrote that I would need a full edition of Kontakt in order to use Pure Jazz Vibes. That being said, if you would need the full edition of Kontakt only for using Pure Jazz Vibes, I understand how that would be pretty cost prohibitive.

Is this correct?

Tonnie van der Heide,

Yes Tonnie, that is a very expensive way to go, sorry about that.

I did a search for Kontakt Player vibraphone and found a number of vibraphones for the free player, including this one: https://www.soniccouture.com/en/products/26-percussion/g46-vibraphone/ Note that I have no experience with this one.

You might want to investigate some of them, some are free, to see if they offer tremolo like the above mentioned one.

You also might look into the free Sample Tank https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/st4/index.php?p=versions
and the free 8 DIO SoundPaint https://8dio.com/ and see what they offer. Note that I have no experience with either of these products.

I hope this helps and good luck.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
