Hey guys...most of my work with BiaB is in restoring and remastering older recordings...this is another example of that but this time I've decided to share both renditions...now you can listen to one or the other or you can listen to both or neither...but I appreciate it when you do listen and comment...the BiaB rendition is a simple acoustic train beat version (kinda where I am right now in my musical tastes)...the original is done in a British pop style and was produced totally on a Yamaha Tyros 2 Arranger Keyboard many years ago...both recordings share the same vocal track though when placed in different stylistic environments sound quite different IMO.

Well, this narrative is getting way too long...so...if you do...thanks for listening and if you listen to both it would be fun for me to know which you prefer?

Dan,

A Solid write (as always).
Interesting to compare the two.

I prefer the BAND in the BIAB version. It has more "life".
The Tyros version is well done, but there is a sense of the tracks being "less important" than the vocals. The instruments are less-distinct than the BIAB version.
Reverb (on the vocals) seems to a "feature" in the original version. It "works"...but is certainly abundant.
The added artifacts always seem to increase that reverb - and on the BIAB version it causes the vocals to kind of run-into-each-other. Not a lot, but enough to be noticeable if you are looking for it (likely most people would not be).

A really good song.

Dan,

I listened to the first verse and chorus of the Tyros version and then dove into the BIAB take. Interesting that it's the same vocal track because as you note the backing really changes the tone. The vocals by the way are absolutely lovely, particularly on that chorus. Of the two versions, I prefer the BIAB version, simply because the beat gives it a more uptempo, joyous feel that I think is more fitting to the tune. Really well done piece!

As I look at Floyd's comments, "more life" is probably the apt descriptor between the two. Not sure I picked up on the impact of the reverb, but as Floyd noted, I wasn't looking for it, so not notable to my lesser ears.

Excellent work!

Floyd...thanks for listening to both versions...the hope is always to improve the song by enhancing the tracks so maybe it happened...I agree with you...thanks again...Dan

Hi Dan.
I liked both versions and it's a lovely song but veer slightly toward the Tyros version for some reason.

Hi Dan,

I listen to most of both versions. I like the BIAB version better. The drive brings the message to the forefront. And I think the BIAB version has better/clearer sound than the Tyros version. Either way, your music is always such a pleasure to listen to. Your vocals are always splendid!

Take care,

Alan

What a nice song, and the vocals are amazing! Both versions are pleasant listening. I lean slightly to the Tyros version since the backing has a glossy sheen that matches the production on the vocals. That being said, your vocals are quite special on their own and might benefit from slightly less reverb. Great song, thanks for sharing!

Okay Dan, another great write and vocal performance - I know I shouldn't covet, but man you make it difficult. Anyway, I really liked both versions, particularly the bass and piano lick at the beginning and the breaks on the Tyros version. However, I prefer the BiaB version hands down. It's a great production on both, but the second is much further along the lines of my personal music preference, and I think it sounds a bit bouncier and upbeat as well. Man, I've missed hearing your stuff!

I actually like both versions. They had unique things about them that worked.

The BB version seems to be more present and with less verb on the voices. Could have gone a bit dryer IMHO. I like the train station style in the BB version. It moves along nicely.

The instruments sounded really nice on the original version. I think there was way too much reverb on the vox and a slower overall feel.

Which one do I like better? That's a toss up.

Dan,

That's a great song... I prefer the BIAB version. It sounds more "pulled together". Great vocals!

Hi, Dan.

The original version sounds very good. Lots of reverb, but comes great in stereo through my monitors. Clear, balanced, and musical. Nice low end on the piano, balanced vocals, excellent leads. Nothing about it would make the think I'd need to change anything. Very nice!

That said, I like the "bounce" of the new version. As floyd jane said, there's more "life" there. It works well, but it would be nice if the vocals could be a bit more up front.

You might consider looking at Clarity Vx DeReverb to cut the reverb on the vocals (and potentially add a different reverb).

If course, with Waves you never want to pay "full" price - they've got sales early and often. And they've got fully functioning demos to see if you like what it does... while you wait for a sale. wink

Very nice! The remix works really well.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

David...thanks for your comments and the tip on the software...so I purchased the DeReverb and have started using it a bit...I think it will be a valuable tool for me...I really appreciate it that you took the time to help me in this area...thanks...Dan

Hey Dan. Tough to call on which I like better as I like both of them. To me the BIAB is more matter of fact or focused the the Tyros version. But I like the softness of the Tyros version.

But that vocal and when the chorus kicks in. Just lifts you out of your chair. Really cool song..

Good morning Dan. This is a fun post for me. Revivals are some of the main work I do with BIAB. Really fun stuff and different interpretations of the same vocals can yield some astounding differences and really reinterpret a song.

Both versions are very good and it's a well written song and good vocal performance. The Tyros version seems to be a better fit for the vocals as I feel the influence of the backing instruments groove helped drive the vocal interpretation. The BIAB version was a great performance but it didn't seem to capture the feel of the song like maybe the style was exactly the right fit. Not criticizing but analytical speaking. An analogy would be Gordon Lightfoot singing in Kris Kristofferson style.

A very enjoyable listen for either version but I found the overall structure of the first version tighter. Good song and a good revival of it. Enjoyed both listens.

Both versions sound good but we prefer the BiaB version.
The train beat works amazingly well with it ... FWIW perhaps a wee bit more gain on the vocal to give it slightly more lift above the drums (which are fine).

OK here we go again - the vocals from you guys are so much like the Gatlin Brothers. Nice!
Can't help that 'cause we used to listen to them so much.

Dan, I call both equal as I couldn't really pick one over the other.
It is not the groove, sounds, or mix that makes the song.
It is your vocal and message.
Loved it

WOW!! This is a lot of fun, Dan. Thanks for putting them both out there. Fun to compare. It is so cool that you used the same vocal tracks. I like the train one, but feel I like the pop one more --actually my preference changes depending on which one I'm listening to. Okay now try a Reggae version. Very talented work, Dan, and I didn't even talk about how good the song is yet.

What an extraordinary group of vocalists. Strong passion and very engaging feeling. Take me away like a thumder in the distance.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hey guys...I am so thrilled and excited that so many of you took the time to listen to both versions and compare them...obviously the song was written and recorded with the Tyros version in mind so the vocals probably have a better groove with the Tyros version...therein lies the challenge of remastering an older vocal track...I suppose I do it just for the fun of it...And give the song a better palate to present the message with...Dan

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
